To Mayor Lyonell Jordan and City Council: As a resident of Fayetteville, I enjoy the variety of restaurants and shops along Dickson Street. I also enjoy attending many events at Walton Arts Center and Theatre Squared. I am grateful for the large Spring Street parking deck that was built several years ago. To my surprise, I have experienced times when that deck was totally occupied. People are needing to park there for a variety of reasons. As you know, the large parking lot along West Avenue currently serves all the venues in the area, too, and it is often filled in the evenings. When that lot disappears to create the green gathering space, available parking will be difficult to find. I've read that a 132-room hotel might be built along West Avenue where the large lot is now. I've also read that the hotel plans to have only 32 parking spaces to serve their hotel. I first thought that had to be a mistake, but I've learned it wasn't. Where will their employees park? Surely, they don't expect them to walk to work or ride bicycles. Where will their room guests park? Have the developers carefully planned the requirements of a hotel? The need for a hotel on the southern end of the new gathering space seems strange to me. The hotel being constructed now on the northwest corner of Dickson and West Ave. will also require parking for its employees and guests. Their parking deck is supposed to not only serve their hotel but also be large enough to accommodate parking spaces that will disappear along West Ave. when the new green space is created. That seems impossible to me, but I hope they are correct. This is all worrisome to me and many other residents of Fayetteville. Cars and trucks are still the major form of transportation for most of us. We need places to park so we can support our local businesses and places of entertainment. I hope the city council can figure out what is best for our city in this situation. Respectfully, Virginia Coogan 1
