Dear Mayor and City Council Members,
My wife and I are downtown homeowners and 2019 supporters of the "Ramble" project. We have
been reading, with interest, newspaper articles about the proposed Civic Plaza 130 room hotel.
As a retired architect, along with many years in the office, retail, casino and hotel development
business, your hotel parking proposal gave me immediate concern the moment I read that there
would be only 32 parking spaces on-site, with remaining parking via off-site valet parking. Past
experience has indicated that the most important pieces related to a successful hotel project are:
location, the development and operating agreements, project design and "ample" convenient parking
for customers and staff. I feel comfortable in saying that this hotel's customers prefer self-parking vs.
valet parking. Remember, this is not New York City. I would also question the off-site valet parking
proposal relative to the distance/location of the off-site parking from the hotel, along with problems
associated with availability of those spaces during peak use nights when Walton Arts Center, Theatre
Square, football games and normal weekend Dickson Street entertainment are occurring. Just last
week, my wife and I attended the Friday 6 pm happy hour at George's Majestic Lounge and could not
find a parking space on Dickson Street or the Civic Plaza site. We ended up parking 4 blocks away
and walking.
Please take the time to study the requirements and issues associated with any of your parking
decisions. A mistake made by a government entity typically takes many years to fix, so let's get it right
up front. The downtown residents and business community deserve a solution that works for them.
Thank you for your time,
Don and Kathryn Stroessner
