In general, I am supportive of this proposed hotel project as referenced in agenda item B.2. I understand there are concerns with the contract language and I trust the city will resolve this if they desire this project to move forward. This proposed hotel is an amenity that is needed within downtown Fayetteville and our burgeoning arts corridor. Providing lodging that isn't only geared towards football gameday accommodations is needed as Fayetteville continues to grow. The proposed location is advantageous because it won't create a cavern along Dickson and allows the Walton Arts Center and the new park to be the star of this block. There is already a node of density at the intersection of Spring St and West Ave that this project will help develop even further. The WAC lobby will also be afforded sweeping views of the new park instead of a multi-story building immediately adjacent. Regarding parking for this proposed project, would the new garage being built adjacent to the former Arsaga's location not have ample capacity for hotel guests? Could the hotel use a shuttle for airport guests? Could the city work with rideshare companies to provide discounted rides to/from the airport if guests are staying downtown? Surely there are opportunities to solve the perceived parking problem other than building more parking capacity. Great places aren't great because of their parking. They're great because they're made for people, and the planned park that will replace this parking lot is a big step in the right direction. Many cities around the country have become subservient to the automobile, and their once-vibrant downtowns have faltered because of that choice. I'd hate to watch Fayetteville fall victim to chasing an insatiable desire for parking that results in the detriment of the great place we already have here in Northwest Arkansas.
