6. Arts One Presents — Guest: Clio Rom
Clio introduced herself and asked for the council to talk about what they are working on.
Harvey introduced herself and gave a brief recap of the history of the council. Past
purpose was to approve donated art and have transitioned to focused on the cultural arts
corridor and growing arts and culture in the city.
Rom asked if the council is functioning on a budget for commissioning art or if they are
more of an approval committee. Stafford responded no, they don't currently have a
budget but hope to with the new arts and culture director. The committee's primary role
is to be the approver of public art and advise the city on what the city should be doing
regarding arts and culture.
DeBari added that members have also created databases for artists and connected
artists with people seeking artists. Stafford added they've created metrics for the city to
use when evaluating art.
Rom is the program and development coordinator for Arts One Presents. She's looking
to learn what people need and to connect people together.
Mission is to empower artists, enrich business, and engage community through
accessible and inclusive visual and performing arts experiences. They were born out of
Arts Center of the Ozarks when their building was sold and reemerged as Arts One
Presents. They strive to represent a diverse community and eliminate barriers for artists
and audiences. They support and empower local artists. They have performing and
visual arts in non-traditional spaces. Working to cultivate new talent. They are hosting
community workshops and building partnerships beyond sponsorships.
Humungous fungus installation by Gina Gallina was a community -built installation in
Springdale at Shiloh Square.
June 11 Arts One is Collaborating with Downtown Springdale Alliance at the Art Walk.
Can follow and share at @artsonepresents or artsonepresents. org.
Cromwell asked about the graphic on the Hunchback of Notre Dame. Rom responded
the graphic is the logo for the Don Tyson School of Innovation.
Harvey thanked Rom for the history of the organization. Harvey asked for clarification if
they want artists to pitch their most groundbreaking ideas to them. How do people pitch
and how do they get support? Rom explained they are working on systematizing their
call for qualifications. They are also creating a cultural assets map. Rom likened the
organization to being match makers for artists and audiences. They'd like to be
introduced to emerging artists, and then go find grants and foundations.
Harvey said it's great to see the organization breaking out of the building as is the
mission and thinks it's a great example of organization evolution
Stafford praised the Arts Center of the Ozarks and asked if Rom has any intention to find
a new space or has the mission changed that they don't need a physical space?
Rom responded, yes, the building no longer served them, and they are now able to bring
the same quality and legacy outside of the building. They are already researching
locations to host plays. Stafford noted their mission to develop the workforce that
supports the arts is so important and incredible careers. Stafford asked what are their
plans to accomplish the work? Rom said they are partnering with Tyson School of
Innovation to try workshops that could be replicated in other areas.
Cromwell noted the old cleaners building is available.
7. Ramble Update — Robert Stafford, FAC
Stafford suggested inviting Peter Nierengarten for next month. He noted he is on the
Ramble steering committee with many others, and it feels like they are not steering the
project or acting in an advisory role. Said several people have issues with the project
regarding not being what the voters voted for, the design, etc. and has been a somewhat
frustrating project for some. He has personal concerns and is also seeing the same
concerns from stakeholders in the community.
The steering committee doesn't meet very often and can give input but isn't a fulfilling
process.
Harvey said she's glad to hear Stafford's perspective and she has heard from people
with concerns with the building. She has also met with the selected group for the RFP.
She asked which committee Stafford is referring to that has questions. Stafford said the
committee for the overall Ramble. His personal concerns are design related regarding
the termination of the view and there is no focal point for the project. There's nothing to
delineate the projects. It's hard to tell who's in charge or how finished the plans are for
the project.
Harvey responded that there is time for input. Council just approved the continuation of
the design and suggested they connect offline to address specifics. She would like to
help get the committee's voices heard.
DeBari will ask if Peter could provide some preliminary materials in advance of the
meeting.
Stafford gave a brief overview of the arts and Culture Director candidate search.
8. Other business and public comment
Hollis noted she watched the meeting that raised some questions around representation
in art and wondered if they could get a someone to come talk with them about how to
handle conversations in the future.
DeBari mentioned she had a contact with a consulting company who may be able to
help facilitate the conversation.
Hollis asked if the contact worked specifically in the art world.
Harvey thanked Hollis for the suggestion to improve moving ahead. She suggested
Hollis think about what they want to get out of the conversation.
Harvey explained the city has budgeted funds for supporting the arts and the council will
be advises the city on where investments in the community should be spent. She also
mentioned the city is doing DEI training as well.
9. Adjournment
Meeting was adjourned at approximately 7:36pm.
