City of Fayetteville – Council Members Thank you, Office of the City Clerk Treasurer 113 W. They might want to think about changing the name of the city of Fayetteville. Fayetteville used to be called George Washington and was later changed to Fayetteville, after Fayetteville, Tennessee. Fayetteville, Tennessee was named after Fayetteville, North Carolina. Fayetteville, North Carolina was named after the Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette, whom also owned slaves. SO the City of Fayetteville is actually named after a slave owner as well. As a matter of fact, Fort Smith was named after General Thomas Adams Smith and he too was a slave owner. So stop with the "woke" nonsense already!!! 1
