Hi,
My name is Rachel Sokora, I am a resident of Springdale and I work at a vets office in Fayetteville. I am emailing you to
voice my support of the ordinance that has been passed to ban the sale of dogs in pet stores. This has been needed for
so long, not only are the dogs being sold there purchased from puppy mills, but they are kept in hazardous conditions,
leading to severe illness. The dogs are over crowded, under vetted, and poorly cared for. This leads to continuous upper
respiratory infections, terrible infestations of parasites, poor growth and even parvovirus. Not only are cages always
dirty, there are dogs who are notably ill, every time, without fail. On top of that, they are being sold to people who are
unable to afford their care, especially after the sickness that has ensued from being in that environment. These dogs are
marketed as pure bred (which they rarely are - not that it matters) and sold for upwards of $4,000. But, if you don’t have
the $4,000 (because who does) the purchasers are offered a payment plan. The purchasers do not have any sort of
history looked into, this may be history of abuse, history of financial issues with clinics, or history of poor care. Once
someone spends $4,000 on a dog, payment plan or not, they typically aren’t going to pay for medical care, because they
can no longer afford it, especially again, the added sickness that comes from the lack of cleanliness, overcrowding and
lack of education on puppy hood.
I truly hope this ordinance falls into place, not only to keep places like PetLand out of Fayetteville, but to hopefully get
them out of not only NWA, but every city, in every state.
Thank you for your time,
Rachel Sokora
