Urban Forestry Advisory Board Meeting
May 4, 2022, at 4:00 p.m.

1. Call to Order— Jennen called the meeting to order at 4:00 pm.
2. Roll Call: Crow, Colvin, Eastin, Chesser, Jennen, Adkisson, Parrish
3. Staff: Scott, Morell
4. Approval of Previous Month's UFAB Minutes-
UFAB Motion: Chesser made a motion to approve minutes. Eastin seconded the
motion. Motion passed 6-0-0.
5. Mulch and the Environmental Action Committee -
Scott discussed the following:
• Sam's uses rubber mulch, and it has been found in the parking lot, and it does leach
into the environment
• They have requested that staff change planting details, that will ban this type of mulch.
UFAB Motion: Eastin made a motion to reflect that we adopt the note as it has been
revised on the Standard City Tree Planting detail. Adkisson seconded the motion.
Motion passed 7-0-0.
6. Amazing Tree of Fayetteville- Dogwood on the north side of lake Fayetteville.
UFAB Motion: Jennen made a motion to accept the Dogwood at Lake Fayetteville as
the 2022 Amazing Tree. Crow seconded the motion. Motion passed 7-0-0.
7. State Champion Trees - There are several species that are not shown, I recently got a
Mexican plum nominated and won.

Scott would like for this board to start searching our parks for some of these missing trees.
Some do not grow in our area.
8. Previous meeting follow-ups-
• Earth Day went well on Friday; we gave away 600 saplings at Wilson Park.
Sunday was rained out at the Botanical Gardens. He gave away 100 trees to
people who participated in the Invasive Program. Next year staff is planning a
larger event.

9. Native or Invasive Plant Presentation- Adkisson - Structure Soil
Adkisson discussed the following:
• Reviewed James Urban's presentation on the Evolution of Tree Soil Under
Pavement.
• Soil Physical and Chemistry Concepts
• A tree's root system is surprisingly shallow
• Needs of soil — interaction with water, sun and air, stable pH, nutrient cycling and
mycorrhizae

10. Project updates -
A. Hose bib- Out to bid.
B. Invasive bounty- Wrap up
C. Earth Day Friday, April 22 — Wrap up
D. Sunday, April 24, - Wrap Up
E. Code Changes — Street Tree Requirements- Presentation. We have the
Administration's support and the City Attorney's support. I have not gotten any follow-
up from developers. We will take it to the planning commission next.
F. Spring Projects are done.
G. I am working on Fall projects
H. Celebration of Trees date is set for October 29tn
11. Adjourn:
UFAB Motion: Chesser made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Eastin seconded the
motion. Motion passed 7-0-0.
Meeting adjourned at 5:00 pm.
