Hogan, 1984 N. East Oaks Dr. #2, Fayetteville, AR, 479-521-5314, jbhogan22@hotmail.com Topic: Proposed Renaming of Leroy Pond Drive to Nolan Richardson Drive Summary: Historic information about Lt. Col. Leroy Pond Lt. Col. Leroy Pond, of Fayetteville, died of wounds received in heroic action during World War II. After the war, the University of Arkansas had a severe housing shortage for returning veterans who wanted to get a college degree. Camp Leroy Pond, using old military barracks, was established along what is now the north side of MLK Boulevard from just past the current Trail of Tears remembrance area to Razorback Road. Leroy Pond Drive was named in honor of Col. Pond's heroism and because he died in the service of our nation in winning the most important war in modern history. There is no objection to naming another street after Coach Nolan Richardson. I would suggest renaming Stadium Drive to Nolan Richardson Drive for his service to the university and to honor him for coaching the Razorback basketball team to the 1994 National Championship. Thank you. Jerry B. Hogan Lt. Col. Leroy Pond was one of the greatest military heroes in Fayetteville history. With the passage of time and with the influx of new people to town and the change that has occurred, Col. Pond's name has nearly been forgotten. All that remains of his courageous service and ultimate sacrifice for our nation is a street named after him and the camp that was once nearby used to ease the overcrowding at the University of Arkansas when all the veterans returned after World War 11. It is my position that Leroy Pond Drive should never be changed, altered, or renamed because of Col. Pond's extraordinary bravery and sacrifice. I do not oppose a street being named after Coach Nolan Richardson who guided the Razorback basketball team to the 1994 National Championship. And I understand that Bud Walton Arena and the basketball practice building are on Leroy Pond Drive but 1 just don't believe we should rename Leroy Pond Drive. 1 suggest instead that we rename Stadium Drive on the U of A campus to Nolan Richardson Drive. That would be a huge honor for Coach Richardson's contribution and would leave Col. Pond's street as it is. Here's a link to a University of Arkansas commemoration of Lt. Col. Pond: Remembering Lt. He said, "if they go ahead and pay me my money, they can take my job tomorrow" after claiming that he was mistreated because of his race. Does anyone remember that? Then Richardson filed a lawsuit against the University. Does that person deserve a street named after him? You take a war hero's name off of the street sign and replace it with this? Think about it! I don't think he deserves the honor. Please don't do it. I'm not sure of the Ward I'm in. I live on East Maple Street. I have just read in the newspaper today that the council has approved naming a street in the city after former Arkansas basketball coach, Nolan Richardson. This was apparently done by the council's fear of being called a racist if they opposed the issue. Richardson called Frank Broyles, a white devil and attempted to sue the University of Arkansas. If that suit was still ongoing. would the council still approved this move. Frank Broyles and Eddy Sutton should be the heroes along with Leroy Pond far above anything Coach Richardson has done. I don't believe that a person that who showed no respect for his former athletic director by calling him bad names and attempted to sue his former school he was given the opportunity to coach., Lt. Colonel Pond gave his life for his country. Frank Broyles' value to the University is much greater as is Eddy Sutton's. Broyles won a national championship and Coach Sutton built the basketball program, not Coach Richardson. You people would probably like to put Nolan Rlchardson's picture on the dollar bill if you could and move George Washington's to one not seen often. If you must continue your quest, put Richardson's name on a new street. and don't move Colonel Pond from his street. March 18, 2021 Fayetteville City Council You councilmen need some courage to stand up for people of honor. Honor is earned by those of character. People who are honest and trustworthy. Calling someone a "white devil". is racist as they come. What if Coach Broyles had called Richardson a black racist? Would you named a street after Broyles? I think not! May God give you all the courage to do what's right. God bless, ftt,k BobbYloud Long time Razorback Fan
