BACKGROUND: YRCC provides a summer camp for families seeking affordable programming during the summer months. Summer Fun4Kids offers eight weeks of programming for 55 children each week who have completed Kindergarten through 5th grades and a Teen Camp for children who have completed 6th through 8th grades. Each week of camp is themed and camps are filled with field trips, games, swimming, art, and educational opportunities. Camp focuses on team building, problem solving, environmental awareness, and leadership- in the community. Transportation for camp is provided by the Fayetteville Boys & Girls Club. Lunches and snacks are provided in partnership with Fayetteville Public Schools. Currently, 176 families have registered to enroll their campers into this year's summer camp, with 58% of the camper families categorizing as extremely low/very low-income levels. YRCC provides free youth recreational programs during the summer months for working parents, free snacks and lunches to a population of children who are part of the free and reduced school lunch program, and most importantly, educational summer experiences. DISCUSSION: YRCC's summer camp has existed as a proven asset to the community served. An additional three staff provided by this donation will allow 20 campers from the wait list who are Fayetteville residents with a priority given to extremely low / very low-income, to participate in camp each week. As Fayetteville grows, the need for service grows. Staff is evaluating programs offered at YRCC and guidelines for participation to better serve the residents of Fayetteville and families in poverty. If this request is approved, an additional three staff (totaling seven staff) will allow 20 campers from the wait list to participate each week. Twenty extra campers per week will decrease the current wait list from over 175 potential campers to fewer than 50 potential campers. Arkansas Community Foundation has confirmed a generous donation of $15,000 to the YRCC for the purposes of supporting three summer camp staff. (See attached email.) YRCC facilities and programs can expand Summer Fun4Kids with this donation, keeping the required ratios for staff to participants. The additional staff will be hired through TEC Staffing, an approved vendor with the City. The urgency of this request is to ensure that YRCC is able to hire camp staff, provide staff training beginning May 21, notify families on the waiting list who will now be able to join camp, and time for parents to attend a mandatory parent orientations June 1-5. Camp starts on June 11. BUDGET/STAFF IMPACT: A $15,000 donation will be utilized to fund hourly wages and uniforms for three YRCC summer camp staff. Camp staff is scheduled for three weeks of training and eight weeks of camp, working up to 35 hours a week. A budget adjustment will recognize $14,800 of the donation funds for extra services for the camp counselors and $200 for the staffs' uniform.
