BACKGROUND: In the spring of 2018, The City trail construction crew will begin work on the 2 -mile long Niokaska Creek Trail connecting Gulley Park to Mud Creek Trail at Old Missouri Road. This new shared use paved trail will provide trail access for over 4,000 residents in the area. In addition, the crew will be replacing approximately 1 mile of the dilapidated asphalt exiting loop trail in Gulley Park. DISCUSSION: The two existing bridges in Gulley Park were installed in 1990 and are only 5 feet in width. The proposed Niokaska Creek Trail will be 12 feet in width and the loop trail within Gulley Park will be 8 feet in width. The proposed trail bridges will be 12 feet in width to safely accommodate the new wider trails and projected increase number of bicycles and pedestrians crossing at these locations. BUDGET/STAFF IMPACT: Five bidders responded to the request for formal bids on January 11'", 2018 and Art Thureson Inc. was the lowest responsive bidder at $39,500 for each bridge. Sufficient funds are available for the purchase of the bridges. The eastern bridge will be purchased using funds from the trail development program because it is part of the transportation network of the Niokaska Creek Trail. The western bridge will be purchased using funds from the parks development program because it is part of the recreational loop trails within Gulley Park.
