This pricing is pursuant to the General Services Administration (GSA) Schedule #GS -35F -0119Y. BACKGROUND: The City currently utilizes two (2) EMC SANs to store the majority of citywide documents. Both devices were purchased in 2009 and will reach their end of support (EOS) in December of this year. The City budgeted to replace both SAN units, within our 2016 Capital Improvements Plan (CIP), to address our growing storage needs, improve performance, and replace prior to their end of support date. The Fayetteville Police Department's currently utilizes an Equall_ogic SAN that was purchased in 2011. The Police Department budgeted to replace the unit, within their Police Network/Server Replacement CIP, to address storage needs and improve performance. As part of our recent Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and Public Safety software upgrades, the City purchased three (3) Nimble SANs to provide the needed storage capacity for both projects. Staff utilized this initial purchase to further analyze Nimble to ensure their SAN solution provided the City with adequate performance, reliability, and scalability. Staff has determined the Nimble storage platform meets and/or exceeds the requirements in each of those areas and requires minimal staff resources to maintain. DISCUSSION: The productivity of much of our City office staff relies on the ability to quickly access files and applications that reside on existing SANs infrastructure. The Nimble SAN solution provides a cost effective, high performance, modular storage infrastructure that can meet our planned storage demands and provide flexibility to increase capacity for future needs. Mailing Address: 113 W. Mountain Street v, rww.fayetteville-ar.gov Fayetteville, AR 72701 Storage Area Networks (SANs) have the following benefits: • Centralized management and scalability- Manage storage for a large group of servers as a single storage pool, as opposed to managing the storage for each server individually. Simplifies the process of adding storage capacity as needs arise; with pooled storage, adding storage capacity can be done "on the fly" with no or minimal downtime. • Multiple copies of data- Our current and proposed SAN infrastructure will be installed at three locations, City Hall, Police Department, and Data Center. This strategy allows for critical data at one physical location to be replicated to a different physical location which is an essential component for disaster recovery preparedness. It also allows for high availability of critical enterprise data and minimizes potential disruption of service. IT staff have executed a phased approach to implementing SANs due to the significant capital cost and staff time required. Phase one of the Nimble SAN implementation was purchasing arrays capable of supporting our ERP and Public Safety software upgrade projects. Phase two consists of expanding the Nimble arrays to take over work loads of all existing aging storage and adding enough capacity to accommodate all near future projects as well. This phased approach has allowed City Staff to utilize and further analyze the initial phase one (1) purchase for an extended period of time before migrating all data into a single system. It also ensures that the correct technology is in place, verifies that the purchase provides good value, has demonstrated to be reliable, and safeguards information by slowly migrating to the new SAN environment. The Police Department IT has followed suit in this phased approach. With the transition of all citywide SAN storage to a unified platform, both the City and Police can leverage their investments to improve storage performance, data resiliency, and disaster recovery. BUDGET/STAFF IMPACT: This project is funded from the Storage Area Network Capital Improvement Project (CIP) and the Police Network/Server Replacement Project (CIP).
