BACKGROUND: The AED is a valuable tool to have in the event of a cardiac arrest or heart attack and is an important part of giving CPR. The use of an AED is recommended by the American Heart Association for persons doing CPR. Since patrol officers are often the first emergency personnel to arrive on scene, it is very important for the officers to have this device in their patrol vehicle when they arrive on scene in the event someone is having a cardiac emergency. DISCUSSION: The use of an AED is taught to the officers during Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (CPR) classes, so there will not be any additional training costs associated with his purchase. Each AED will be held in a soft carry case with two sets of adult defibrillation pads and one set of pediatric defibrillation pads. This purchase will equip each marked patrol unit with its' own AED and allow for several unmarked units to be assigned an AED. BUDGET/STAFF IMPACT: Funding for these AEDs is budgeted in the 2015 Operating Budget via a request made through the Capital Improvements Program.
