RECOMMENDATION Fayetteville City Staff recommends approval of the purchase of Aluminum Shoring for the Water & Sewer Division from United Rentals North America, Inc. for $29,561.54, Bid No. 15-49, plus sales tax of $2,882.25 for a total of $32,443.79. BACKGROUND Excavating is recognized as one of the most hazardous construction operations. Trench shoring is the process of bracing the walls of a trench to prevent collapse. There are basically three types of shoring, timber, steel and aluminum. The trend today is toward the use of aluminum shoring. It is light enough to be installed by one worker, gauge regulated to ensure even distribution along the trench line, and can adapt easily to various trench depths. DISCUSSION The shoring that is being requested for purchase has the capabilities to protect our employees in ditches ranging from 5 ft in depth to 16 ft in depth. This covers the majority of repairs performed. The department's current shoring is not adequate for many of the depths that we must go to for repairs. To that regard we have been renting shoring at a cost of $2,000 to $2,500 per repair, and have to wait for delivery of that shoring. In acquiring this shoring, we will be able to perform our repairs quicker, and we won't have to rent the shoring needed for safety. So far in 2015, the Department has rented shoring 3 times per. Under that scenario, the shoring would pay for itself in under 5 years, and will last indefinitely if handled correctly. There were four (4) bids submitted to the City.of Fayetteville for aluminum shoring.
