A RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING APPLICATION FOR A 2013 KEEP
AMERICA BEAUTIFUL/WASTE MANAGEMENT GRANT IN THE
AMOUNT OF $10,000.00
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
FAYETTEVILLE, ARKANSAS:
Section 1. That the City Council of the City of Fayetteville, Arkansas hereby authorizes
application for a 2013 Keep America Beautiful/Waste Management grant in the amount of
$10,000.00.

Subject: Resolution Authorizing Application for a 2013 Keep America Beautiful — Waste Management Grant.
RECOMMENDATION
Fayetteville City Administration recommends authorizing application for a 2013 Keep America Beautiful — Waste
Management Grant in the amount of $10,000.
BACKGROUND
Council authorized creation of a City Committee through resolution 179-12 for Keep Fayetteville Beautiful which is an
affiliate of Keep Arkansas Beautiful and Keep America Beautiful. The affiliation allows grants to be applied for through
Keep America Beautiful. A Keep America Beautiful / Waste Management Grant for Community Improvement is being
sought for a program of improving community through Environmental Design.
DISCUSSION
The goal of this project is to use public art installations as deterrents against graffiti and vandalism. The idea of using
public art and beautification as a graffiti deterrent is based on the success of a program in Tampa, Florida led by the City
of Tampa Public Art Program. This program successfully used public art, particularly on traffic light signal boxes, to
reduce incidences of graffiti, lower graffiti removal costs, improve the appearance of the local community, and provide
local artists an opportunity to share their work with the public.
The Fayetteville Housing Authority has given approval for projects to occur at their properties and Fayetteville in Bloom
has also given support of donating $1,000 for the project.
BUDGET IMPACT
The $10,000 will be received into a Capital Improvement Project along with a budget adjustment upon acceptance of the
grant. This is a not a matching grant.
