This north -south street starts out as S Garland Ave at the northwest corner of the Fayetteville High School campus, runs south between the High School and the University soccer fields, crosses Martin Luther King Blvd and continues south for a couple of blocks as S Paris Ave. This proposal will rename both this section of S Garland Ave and this section of S Paris Ave to S Stadium Drive.(See attached Map) DISCUSSION: This street name change was initiated at the request of Steven Beam of Crafton Tull on behalf of University Student Living, LLC., who is developing a new student housing project to be located south of Martin Luther King Blvd at the end of S Paris Ave. The developer desired a street name that had a connection to the University and had proposed several street name options that had been turned down by the 9-1-1 street name committee. When we realized that the University was intending to extend Stadium Drive down through S Garland to the intersection of MLK, it seemed like a good solution to rename Paris Ave to Stadium Drive. This was suggested to the developer and they agreed. Subsequently, as estimates were requested for sign prices, it was suggested by Brad Anderson in Transportation that it would simpify signage and navigation if we also changed S Garland Ave to S Stadium Drive at the same time. That way the street name would be the same on both sides of MLK which would save money on signage and reduce confusion for motorists. This street name change will require 10 residences to change their address from S Paris Ave to S Stadium Dr. The owners have been contacted by mail about this proposal. It will also require two addresses to change on S Garland Ave, but they are both University accounts at the soccer field so should not cause a big problem. You'll note on the "Overview" map that there will still be a portion of the future extended Stadium Drive that is not being renamed at this time — the Virginia Ave section. Staff opinion is that renaming of this portion at this time might unnecessarily encourage traffic on a narrow residential street, and would also require address changes for 23 residential addresses, so it should wait until the new road is built. I have discussed this with Kevin Santos of the University of Arkansas Planning Department, and they have no objections to our proposal. The packet includes a copy of the "Campus Transportation Plan" that shows the future Stadium Drive. THE CITY OF FAYETTEVILLE, ARKANSAS RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends approval of the Resolution. Mountain St. Fayetteville, AR 72701 RECEIVED €'tt 2 Cir( OF FAY OFFICE LE MAYOR'S Facilities Management Dear Mayor Jordan and City Council, The renaming of South Garland Avenue from Stone Street to Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Paris Avenue south of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard to Stadium Drive is consistent with the University of Arkansas's plans to connect the existing southern terminus of Stadium Drive to the section proposed for renaming. The University owns most of the property along Virginia Avenue and plans to purchase all of the properties that would make this connection. When this happens, we will ask that Virginia Avenue also be renamed Stadium Drive, making Stadium Drive a continuous street from Maple Street to south of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.
