Nature Trail Naming at Lake Fayetteville Environmental Study Center
PROPOSAL:
The City of Fayetteville leases approximately 200 acres on the east side of Lake Fayetteville to the
Fayetteville School District for the purpose of environmental education. The Environmental Study
Center is located in the lease are and used by both Fayetteville and Springdale Public Schools. A
network of nature trails is also located in the lease area and is used by the public and schools as part
of their curriculum. The staff at the Environmental Study Center requested to name the trails, after
discussion with the Fayetteville Fire Department, to increase the safety of the students and the public.
The Park Facility Naming Policy requires park and trail facilities to be reviewed by the Parks and
Recreation Advisory Board (PRAB) for a recommendation, then forwarded to City Council for
approval. PRAB reviewed the naming proposals at the November 5th meeting and tabled the item per
policy procedure. The names will be voted on by PRAB at the December 3rd meeting for a
recommendation to the City Council.
RECOMMENDATION:
Staff recommends naming the nature trails at the Lake Fayetteville Environment Study Center as
proposed on the attached map. A recommendation from PRAB will be provided after the December
3rd meeting.
BUDGET IMPACT:
None.

FAYETTEVILLE PARKS AND RECREATION
ADVISORY BOARD
Minutes for November 5, 2012
Opening:
The regular meeting of the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board was
called to order by Steve Meldrum at 5:32 p.m. in Room 111 at the City
Administration Building at 113 West Mountain Street in Fayetteville,
Arkansas.
Present:
Parks and Recreation Advisory Board members Mason, Meldrum, Waite,
Watson, McKnight, Leonard, Lawson and Sass were present. Paul was
absent. Staff members Edmonston, Humphry, Jumper, Gipson and
Thomas were in attendance.
AGENDA:
5. Naming of Lake Fayetteville Nature Trails: Lawanna Banning,
Lake Fayetteville Environmental Study Center Teacher
Lake Fayetteville Environmental Study Center has proposed to
name the nature trails used by their program to teach children at
their center in order to expedite emergency notification of
Fire/Police/Ambulance in the event of an emergency. They have
proposed names of five nature trails as designated on the attached
map.
Park Staff Recommendation: Staff approves the proposed names
of the nature trails. However, this item needs to be tabled for one
month according to the Park Naming Facilities Policy in order to
provide time for public input concerning the names of the trails.
PRAB's approved proposed names of the trails will be forwarded to
City Council for final approval.
Banning said she has been working with the Fayetteville Fire
Department. There are four trails that have proposed names (the
1
Spring Trail is now closed) so if there is an emergency, the FFD can
more easily find the person.
Meldrum wanted to know if signs would be on the trails, or would
she work with the authorities.
Banning said she is just working with the authorities.
Watson commented that it would be important for trail users to
know the names in case of an emergency.
Meldrum said it would be good to put small signs at the beginning
of each section. He then asked for a motion.
Edmonston said it had to be tabled for a month.
Watson wanted to know what needed to be done to make sure the
additional signs would be addressed.
Edmonston said Parks would take care of it.
PRAB Motion: This will be tabled for a month to allow for public
input.
