A RESOLUTION TO RECOMMEND POSTING QUARTERLY REPORTS
ABOUT RECYCLING EFFORTS AND SEEKING NEW MARKETS FOR
ADDITIONAL RECYCLED MATERIAL
WHEREAS, Fayetteville has made a commitment to waste minimization and
sustainability efforts, the City Council would like to acknowledge the continual hard work and
dedication of the City Solid Waste and Recycling Staff in their effort to reduce the volume and
toxicity of the city's solid waste stream; and
WHEREAS, it is recognized that there are costs involved in the collection and
processing of materials and that an item is not recycled until it is transformed into something
new; and
WHEREAS, the City of Fayetteville is a leader in Northwest Arkansas and the state in
regards to closed loop recycling; and
WHEREAS, citizens and businesses play a key role in the success of our waste
minimization program; and
WHEREAS, it is important to inform and educate the public about the end uses of the
collected materials as well as our diversion rate; and
WHEREAS, City staff collects data and creates an annual report to meet state guidelines.
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF FAYETTEVILLE, ARKANSAS:
Section 1: That the City Council of the City of Fayetteville, Arkansas hereby
recommends to Mayor Jordan that the City's Solid Waste and Recycling Division post existing
quarterly reports regarding the volumes of all types of material that are collected for recycling
and the primary or end-use of those materials so that our citizens can see that Fayetteville's Solid
Waste and Recycling Division's efforts to clean and separate materials actually do result in a
closed-loop process, and include the costs, expenses, revenues and cost savings of the recycling
program.
Section 2: That the City Council of the City of Fayetteville, Arkansas hereby recognizes
that because technology is changing constantly, new markets are opening for items currently
destined for the landfill. The City Council hereby encourages the staff to seek new markets and
cost effective ways to increase the number of materials pulled from our city's waste stream.
PASSED and APPROVED this 18`h day of January, 2011.
