Subject: Resolution Authorizing the Mayor to Apply for a 2010 ADEQ Recycling Education Grant through the
Boston Mountain Solid Waste District for $25,000 for Recycling Education Support
RECOMMENDATION
Fayetteville City Administration recommends approval for the Mayor to apply for a 2010 Arkansas Department
of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) education grant though the Boston Mountain Solid Waste District for
$25,000 for recycling education support.
BACKGROUND
Each year the Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality issues recycling grants through local Solid Waste
Districts to help fund recycling programs. The City has benefited from these grants in the past. The Boston
Mountain Solid Waste District compiles the grant applications and submits them to the Solid Waste Board for
approval at their August Board meeting. If approved, this would be the first recycling grant the City would
receive.
DISCUSSION
This grant would be used to help develop an education program that will reach all age groups and encompass all
types of recycling. It will be established as an on-going project. Fayetteville, Arkansas, is fortunate to have
several residents and businesses committed to recycling, but they also would like additional information on
recycling, including national and world trends on reuse programs. This program will be tailored to match what
the specific community of Fayetteville needs for recycling education rather than a broad education application
and include a comprehensive education program.
BUDGET IMPACT
The recycling grant awards are not matching grants, so no City funds are obligated with this request. Upon
approval and award of the grant a budget adjustment will be requested to recognize the grant revenue and a
capital project will be created.
