HomeMy WebLinkAbout20-09 RESOLUTIONRESOLUTION NO. 20-09 A RESOLUTION TO THANK AEP/SWEPCO, OZARKS ELECTRIC COOPERATIVE AND THEIR EMPLOYEES FOR THEIR QUICK RESPONSE AND HARD WORK TO RESTORE POWER TO FAYETTEVILLE CITIZENS. WHEREAS, when the City of Fayetteville suffered the worst ice storm damage in history to its trees and electrical infrastructure on Tuesday afternoon and evening January 27, 2009, AEP/SWEPCO and Ozarks Electric Cooperative immediately called in about 500 out-of- town employees to help restore electrical power; and WHEREAS, despite the icy conditions and tree blocked city streets during the first 48 hours of the ice storm emergency that made the electrical workers' efforts more difficult, local and regional AEP/SWEPCO and Ozarks Electric Cooperative workers persevered and worked closely with city crews and the Mayor to restore electrical power to critical facilities including the senior citizen high-rise during the first day after the storm; and WHEREAS, AEP/SWEPCO personnel worked long hours and around the clock during the worst part of the outage until by Saturday evening, 95% of AEP/SWEPCO customers in Fayetteville had had their power restored; and WHEREAS, AEP/SWEPCO and Ozarks Electric Cooperative crews have maintained their efforts to bring all of its Fayetteville customers electrical service as soon as possible. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF FAYETTEVILLE, ARKANSAS Section 1: That the City Council of the City of Fayetteville, Arkansas hereby thanks AEP/SWEPCO and Ozarks Electric Cooperative for their prompt and massive effort to restore electrical power to Fayetteville institutions, businesses and residences as soon as possible under very difficult and unpleasant conditions. ; c"- • y. Clarice Clarice Buffalohead-Pearman, CMC, CAMC City Clerk/Treasurer Division 113 West Mountain Fayetteville, AR 72701 479-575-8309 cpearma n@ci.fayetteville. ar. us file://C:\Documents%20and%20Settings\cpearman.000\Local%20Settings\Temp\XPgrpwise\49902C00FA... 2.9.09 THE CITY OF FAYETTEVILLE, ARKANSAS DISASTER EMERGENCY PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, on January 26 and 27, 2009, the City of Fayetteville in Washington County, Arkansas, was struck by a major ice storm, and WHEREAS, tens of thousands of people in the City of Fayetteville were left with no power and blocked city streets; and WHEREAS, the City of Fayetteville immediately began emergency measures to begin clearing downed trees and broken limbs that were blocking city streets and to establish emergency shelters for citizens who had lost power and needed food and shelter assistance; and WHEREAS, these power outages lasted for over a week and the downed trees and broken limbs have created mountains of debris, and WHEREAS, immediate attention is required to protect public health, safety welfare of the citizens of Fayetteville and to and render emergency relief in the City of Fayetteville, Washington County, Arkansas; and, WHEREAS, I, Lioneld Jordan, Mayor of the City of Fayetteville, Arkansas do find that the aforementioned problems constituted by January 27th and continue to constitute a threat to the safety and welfare of the citizens of City of Fayetteville and has created an emergency disaster situation within the meaning of the Arkansas Emergency Service Act of 1973, codified as A.C.A. §12-75-101 et. seq. NOW THEREFORE, under the power vested in me under Arkansas Emergency Service Act of 1973, codified as A.C.A. §12-75-101, I, Lioneld Jordan, Mayor of Fayetteville, do hereby declare the City of Fayetteville, Arkansas to be a local disaster area entitled to aid relief and assistance, which shall include but not be limited to debris removal, the providing of food, clothing, shelter, and transportation to those in need, and all services listed in A.C.A. § 12-75-103. IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I set my hand and seal to this instrument this 5111 day of February, 2009 at the City of Fayetteville Administration Building in Fayetteville, Arkansas. This proclamation shall expire after one hundred twenty (120) days unless, otherwise extended by the Fayetteville City Council.
