HomeMy WebLinkAbout19-09 RESOLUTIONRESOLUTION NO. 19-09 A RESOLUTION TO THANK CITY EMPLOYEES FOR THEIR DEDICATED AND EFFICIENT, AROUND-THE-CLOCK EFFORTS TO CLEAR CITY STREETS UNDER HARSH AND DIFFICULT CONDITIONS. WHEREAS, the City of Fayetteville suffered the worst ice storm on record in terms of damage to trees, blockage of city streets, and loss of electrical power to almost the entire city on Tuesday, January 27, 2009; and WHEREAS, the dedicated city employees from Solid Waste, Water and Sewer, Transportation, Parks and other divisions braved harsh and difficult conditions including blocked and icy streets, downed power lines and frigid temperatures to tackle the massive effort to clear city streets of fallen trees, limbs and other debris and to ensure essential water and sewer service was continued for all citizens; and WHEREAS, many citizens worked together to help their neighbors clear driveways and even some city streets in the spirit of volunteer, community action; and WHEREAS, dedicated city employees from all divisions worked together on Wednesday, January 28th to keep the City Administration Building open and functioning when many employees remained marooned in their dark homes with roads blocked by fallen trees; and WHEREAS, Police and Fire personnel maintained order and essential services throughout this natural disaster with no loss of life or major crime problem within the City of Fayetteville; and WHEREAS, Mayor Jordan and Chief of Staff Don Marr worked tirelessly to assist the citizens throughout this emergency by properly deploying and equipping city personnel for the clean-up effort, establishing shelters for citizens, and coordinating with Washington County officials, Governor Beebe and FEMA representatives for emergency help. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF FAYETTEVILLE, ARKANSAS• Section 1: That the City Council of the City of Fayetteville, Arkansas hereby expresses its deepest gratitude to the many city employees who responded under harsh and difficult conditions to the ice storm emergency with the dedication, professionalism and hard work necessary to overcome the devastation wrought by the ice storm. Section 2: That the City Council of the City of Fayetteville, Arkansas hereby commends Mayor Jordan, Chief of Staff Marr, Chiefs Tabor and Johnson and the directors and managers of our City divisions for their leadership and cooperation throughout this crisis.
