CITY ATTORNEY DEPARTMENTAL CORRESPONDENCE LEGAL DEPARTMENT TO: Lioneld Jordan, Mayor City Council CC: Chief Tony Johnson FROM: Kit Williams, City Attorney DATE: July 14, 2009 RE: Washington Regional Medical Center should be one of Arkansas' Level 11 Trauma Centers Chief Johnson and Mayor Jordan recommend that the City Council pass a Resolution supporting a bid by Washington Regional Medical Center to become a Level II Trauma Center. Our State Legislature enacted funding for trauma centers for Arkansas because we have one of the highest rates of motor vehicle crashes, traumatic brain injuries in children and serious fire related injuries in the country. Regional Level II Trauma Centers can often mean the difference between life and death of a traumatically injured person. The modern and comprehensive facilities and equipment at Washington Regional Medical Center, as well as its large and competent professional staff would provide an excellent base of support for a Regional Level 11 Trauma Center, The large medical park surrounding Washington Regional houses numerous medical experts and specialists in many medical fields that are also vital to the proper functioning of a Level 11 Trauma Center. Because of these many existing medical assets and Washington Regional Medical Center's central location and immediate access to I-540, Washington Regional Medical Center is uniquely positioned to best serve this whole region as the Level II Trauma Center. Accordingly, the City of Fayetteville should pledge its unqualified support to help make Washington Regional Medical Center a Level 11 Trauma Center. RESOLUTION NO.
