Martin, Financial Coordinator Date: April 30, 2009 Subject: Budget adjustment to recognize grant awards from Community Development Block Grant fund RECOMMENDATION Approval of a resoluion to accept grant funds from the Community Development Block Grant and a budget adjustment in the amount of $28,233 for the Yvonne Richardson Community Center Program for the FUN4KIDS program. BACKGROUND Parks and Recreation was awarded $28,233 from the Community Development Block Grant for the operation of recreation programs for the Yvonne Richardson Community Center (YRCC). These funds will allow for funding of the FUN4KIDS program that includes field trips, game equipment, transportation, mentoring / tutoring program and special events. Special events will include back -to school and holiday parties. These events assist financially challenged families with the opportunity to recieve free school supplies and Christmas gifts for their children. DISCUSSION The Community Block Grant funds will provide a comprehensive recreation program for the children and families of the YRCC. Most YRCC participants come from low income families and need inviting places where they learn positive life skills and participate in healthy activities. YRCC has developed a program to assist youth with homework and studying for schoolwork in which field trips and prizes are offered for participation. YRCC Staff is partnering with Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Northwest Arkansas to provide positive role models for each of these children in need, City Council Meeting of May 19, 2009 BUDGET IMPACT Agenda Item Number By approving this resolution, the overall budget for the YRCC fund will increase. The YRCC fund will increase $28,233 to reflect the cost of these program expenses. This adjustment is for Community Development Block Grant funds which are administered by the Community Resources Division. The Grant expenses are in their operation budget. The budget adjustment for the YRCC budget is necessary because the expenses will reflect from this program. After the expenses occur and receipts are provided to Community Resources, a reimbursement payment will be received by the City of Fayetteville for the expenses in this program. YRCC was also awarded $21,848 from Community Development Block Grant funds for a storage building and to purchase Kidtrax Program.
