DEPARTMENTAL CORRESPONDENCE

THRU: Paul A. Becker, Director of Finance
FROM: Kevin Springer, Budget Director
DATE. February 13, 2008
SUBJECT: 2007 Budget Amendment: Drug Law Enforcement Fund
Fire Pension Fund
Recommendation
Staff recommends approval of the attached Budget Amendments to correct budgeted items in 2007
as follows:
Drug Law Enforcement Fund
Fire Pension Fund
36,902
70,844
Discussion
Drug Law Enforcement Fund: Drug Task Force (DTF) expenses are routinely incurred as a pass-
through in the Drug Law Enforcement Fund. The expenses are charged to the DTF Program
Expense account and the revenue is receipted through Federal Grants. During 2007, $36,902 in
expenditures were incurred over the original budgeted amounts. The funds to cover the increased
DTF Program Expenses cost come additional Federal Grant revenue and do not increase the Use of
Reserves for the Drug Law Enforcement Fund.
Fire Pension Fund: During the November 29, 2007 Firemen's Pension and Relief Fund, Board of
Trustees meeting, a back pay benefit was approved for three retired Fire employees. The benefit was
authorized by State Law but had been erroneously left out. The $70,844 in funds needed to cover the
increased benefit cost come from the Fire Pension Fund investments.
It is noteworthy to mention that concerning the Fire Pension Fund, the "Firemen's Pension and Relief
Fund, Board of Trustees" is the authority authorized by State Law and has complete control of
expenses and the use of pension funds. This Budget Amendment is Just an administrative item.
Budget Impact & Closing
All of the funds requested in this re -authorization come from revenues and do not increase the use of
operating reserves. If you have any questions concerning the attachment or the procedure, please feel
free to contact either Paul A. Becker (575-8330) or Kevin Springer (575-8226). Thank you for your
attention to this request.
