HomeMy WebLinkAbout242-08 RESOLUTION1 RESOLUTION NO. 242-08 A RESOLUTION TO PROTECT AND CELEBRATE FAYETTEVILLE'S HERITAGE, USE HISTORIC ASSETS FOR ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AND COMMUNITY REVITALIZATION, AND ENCOURAGE PEOPLE TO EXPERIENCE AND APPRECIATE LOCAL HISTORIC RESOURCES THROUGH EDUCATION AND HERITAGE TOURISM PROGRAMS BY SEEKING DESIGNATION AS A PRESERVE AMERICA COMMUNITY. WHEREAS, Preserve America is a White House initiative developed in cooperation with the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, the U.S. Department of the Interior, and the U.S. Department of Commerce; and WHEREAS, the goals of this initiative include a greater shared knowledge about our Nation's past, strengthened regional identities and local pride, increased local participation in preserving the country's irreplaceable cultural and natural heritage assets, and support for the economic vitality of communities; and WHEREAS, this initiative is compatible with our community's interests and goals related to historic preservation; and WHEREAS, designation as a Preserve America Community will improve our community's ability to protect and promote its historical resources. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF FAYETTEVILLE, ARKANSAS' Section 1: That the City Council of the City of Fayetteville, Arkansas hereby formally seeks designation as a Preserve America Community in order to protect and celebrate Fayetteville's heritage, use our historic assets for economic development and community revitalization, and encourage people to experience and appreciate local historic resources through education and heritage tourism programs. BACKGROUND `Preserve Americalis a [national] initiative that encourages and supports community efforts to preserve and enjoy our priceless cultural and natural heritage. The goals of the initiative include a greater shared knowledge about the nation's past, strengthened regional identities and local pride, increased local participation in preserving the country's cultural and natural heritage assets, and support for the economic vitality of our communities." www.preserveamerica.org Preserve America communities is a program that recognizes municipalities for protecting and celebrating their community's heritage. Once a community is designated as a Preserve America community, the community becomes eligible for up to $250,000 in federal grants. Fayetteville has a wealth of heritage resources, including the Clinton House Museum, the Heritage Trail, and the myriad activities organized by the Washington County Historical Society at Headquarters House. Most recently, the City Council reestablished the Historic District Commission and designated White Hangar at Drake Field as a local ordinance district, reaffirming Fayetteville's commitment to heritage preservation. The attached resolution is required in a complete application to become a Preserve America community. Letters of endorsement for Fayetteville have been written by Congressman John Boozman, State Representative Lindsley Smith, Arkansas Air Museum Board President Hugh Brewer, Washington County Historical Society President A.D. Poole, Regional Planning Commission Assistant Director John McClarty, and Arkansas Air Museum Director Warren Jones. BUDGET IMPACT None RESOLUTION NO.
