BACKGROUND
`Preserve Americalis a [national] initiative that encourages and supports community efforts to
preserve and enjoy our priceless cultural and natural heritage. The goals of the initiative include a
greater shared knowledge about the nation's past, strengthened regional identities and local pride,
increased local participation in preserving the country's cultural and natural heritage assets, and
support for the economic vitality of our communities." www.preserveamerica.org
Preserve America communities is a program that recognizes municipalities for protecting and
celebrating their community's heritage. Once a community is designated as a Preserve America
community, the community becomes eligible for up to $250,000 in federal grants. Fayetteville
has a wealth of heritage resources, including the Clinton House Museum, the Heritage Trail, and
the myriad activities organized by the Washington County Historical Society at Headquarters
House. Most recently, the City Council reestablished the Historic District Commission and
designated White Hangar at Drake Field as a local ordinance district, reaffirming Fayetteville's
commitment to heritage preservation. The attached resolution is required in a complete
application to become a Preserve America community.
Letters of endorsement for Fayetteville have been written by Congressman John Boozman, State
Representative Lindsley Smith, Arkansas Air Museum Board President Hugh Brewer,
Washington County Historical Society President A.D. Poole, Regional Planning Commission
Assistant Director John McClarty, and Arkansas Air Museum Director Warren Jones.
