RE• Martin Luther King Boulevard
Several aldermen asked me to draft a Resolution to make 6th Street
officially "Martin Luther King Boulevard." As you know, 6th Street was
designated Honorary Martin Luther King Boulevard a few years back, but this
change will place Martin Luther King Boulevard on the Fayetteville map, on the
highway exit signs for 1-540 and on one of the largest and most important traffic
arteries in Fayetteville.
It seems very appropriate to rename 6th Street as Martin Luther King
Boulevard as it passes Fayetteville High School which became one of the first
southern schools to voluntarily and peaceably desegregate after the United States
Supreme Court ruled segregation laws were unconstitutional in 1954.
It is also appropriate and just to name one of Fayetteville's major
thoroughfares running from Farmington to Elkins through the southern heart of
Fayetteville as Martin Luther King Boulevard in honor of the man who stood firm
for nonviolent struggle to bring America into the light and who gave his life to an
assassin's bullet rather than turn his face from the struggle for equality and Justice.
The aldermen have smartly proposed that this renaming not take full effect
until Martin Luther King Day on January 19, 2009, to give all businesses, homes,
and addresses on the new Martin Luther King Boulevard a full year to change
stationery or anything else necessary for a smooth transition to the street's new
name.

The GIS office will handle the notifications for the 6th Street name change to Martin Luther King Blvd. Two notifications will be
sent. One within a few weeks (early February), and the other after school starts in the Fall --this will catch any new property owners
and residents. We will send a letter and a copy of the City Council Resolution to all the Businesses, Residents, Property Owners,
and Non-profit Organizations along 6th street. We will advise them of the date that this change will occur, so that they can prepare
and notify those they do business with. We will also explain that the City will notify some organizations of the charge, so that they
Mil not be duplicating this effort.
Organizations the Oty of Fayetteville will notify:
County E911
Central EMS
United States Post Office
AHTD
AT&T
County Assessors Office
County Clerk
Arkansas Westem Gas
Fayetteville Public Ubrary
Fayetteville Public Schools
SWEPCO
Ozark Electric
Washington County Water Authority
Cox Communication
University of Arkansas
We will also inform them that the Post Office will deliver to both addresses for up to a year, after the date of the official name
change.
AHTD
I spoke with David Lambert, the State Maintenance Engineer (AHTD), he said that they need several months notice to make a street
name change. I will send him the Resolution and notification of the pending change within the next week, then I will follow-up
with a reminder In October. He said that they will place the signs, but leave them covered until January 19th 2009. I will also call
with a reminder on January 12th 2009, so that we are sure to have the signs unveiled before the MLK Holiday weekend.
If you have any suggestions regarding this notification, please email me.
Thanks!
