The project encompasses the purchase of twelve (12) traffic signal pre-emption devices for the following intersections: Highway 112 and Truckers Fifteenth and Momingside Happy Hollow and Huntsville Highway 112 and I-540 NB Ramp Highway 112 and Drake Weddington and I-540 East Side Fifteenth and Armstrong/Curtis Huntsville and Crossover Weddington and I-540 West Side/Shiloh Highway 112 and I-540 SB Ramp Fifteenth and South School Weddington and Garland Background In an effort to reduce the risk of emergency vehicles accidents at high-volume, signal controlled intersections; the department has identified high-risk intersections that are in need of having pre-emption devices installed. The purchase, installation, and utilization of the pre-emption devices will reduce the risk of emergency vehides being involved in accidents by allowing the unit to transmit a strobe -coded signal that will pre-empt the traffic signal, thus granting the right-of-way to the emergency vehicle actuating the signal. Discussion The initial submission by the department was for nine intersections that have been impacted by the city's growth. On our final review, we noticed that we had overlooked three intersections that have been impacted by increase traffic and congestion. I believe it's in the best interest of public safety to amend the initial request by including the three additional devices. audaet Imaact The proposed funding mechanism for the project is the Fire Department Impact Fees Account.
