Revised April 16, 2007
FAYETTEVILLE
THE CITY OF FAYETTEVILLE, ARKANSAS
DEPARTMENTAL CORRESPONDENCE
TO: Mayor Dan Coody and Members of the City Council
FROM: Greg Tabor, Chief of Police
DATE: May 11, 2007
SUBJECT: Additional Funds for Selective Traffic Enforcement Project (STEP) Grant
Recommendation: Council approves a resolution allowing the police department to
accept an additional $30,000 for use in its Selective Traffic Enforcement Project and
approves a budget adjustment recognizing the revenue.
Background: The Police Department has received STEP grants since 1990. These
grants are used to cover overtime while working either seat belt enforcement or
DWUDUI enforcement. The officers must be designated to one of these tasks and cannot
answer normal calls for service
Discussion: Spending during the 2006-2007 grant cycle has been ahead of pace.
Approximately 84% of grant funds and 50% of matching funds have been utilized within
the first six months of the cycle. These additional funds will be used to help sustain our
level of enforcement during the summer's upcoming "Click It or Ticket" and "Drunk
Driving, Over the Limit Under Arrest" national enforcement campaigns. Of these funds,
$10,000 will be dedicated to seat belt enforcement and $20,000 for DWI enforcement.
These additional funds do not require a match.
Budget Impact: Accepting this grant amendment will increase overtime for the STEP
Program by $30,000.00.
