CITY COUNCIL AGENDA MEMO
City Council Meeting of June 6, 2006
To: Mayor and City Council
Thru: Gary Dumas, Director of Operations
From: Ron Petrie, City Engineer rise
Date: May 18, 2006
Subject: Resolution expressing the willingness of the City of Fayetteville to participate
in partial funding of the proposed widening of Highway 180 (Garland Avenue)
from Wedington Drive to Melmar Street.
RECOMMENDATION
Staff recommends approval of a resolution expressing the willingness of the City of
Fayetteville to participate in partial funding of the proposed widening of Highway 180
(Garland Avenue) from Wedington Drive to Melmar Street.
BACKGROUND
The proposed Transportation Improvement Plan contains several street widening projects
that are state highways within the City limits. In an effort to reduce the City's costs for
these projects, the City Administration has contacted the Arkansas Stare Highway &
Transportation Department and has been successful in establishing partnerships for
several of these projects.
CURRENT STATUS
The Arkansas State Highway & Transportation Department (AHTD) is in the process of
developing the Statewide Transportation Improvement Program (STIP) for the fiscal
years 2007 through 2010. The AHTD has proposed a 50 percent cost share up to $1.5
million for the widening of Highway 180 from Wedington Drive to Melmar Street. This
portion of Highway 180 is currently listed in the City Transportation Improvement Plan.
At this time, the AHTD has requested that the City "provide a resolution referring
specifically to the proposed project and to the level of funding committed to the project."

BUDGET IMPACT
There is no cost associated with this request at this time. However, in the future, the city
will be obligated to pay 50% of the project costs up to $1,500,000 in order to utilize the
state funds. These matching funds are currently being planned to be paid with the
proposed Transportation Improvement Bond Issue. If this bond issue does not proceed or
is not successful in an election, an alternate source for this funding will need to be
identified or the project cancelled.
