This program was established and funded under the 2003 Department of Homeland Security FIRE Act Grant. RECOMMENDATION The Fire Department recommends approval of a Resolution awarding Bid 04-24, for $34,408 for the purchase of commercial grade physical fitness equipment for the Fire Department's recently established Wellness & Fitness Program. BACKGROUND During the 2003, FIRE Act Grant program the Fire Department submitted a request for $132,000 to help establish a Wellness & Fitness Program within the Department This grant was approved and awarded in December 2003. Since that time, the Fire Department has worked closely with Dr. Barry Brown, from the University of Arkansas, to establish this program, which will help reduce the likelihood various health related issues, which continue to plague Fire Fighters. This program will also reduce the number of injuries to Fire Fighters and speed up the required recovery time for these persons when they experience unpreventable injuries. DISCUSSION As previously stated, the Fire Department is working diligently to establish this program in conjunction with Dr. Barry Brown, of the University of Arkansas. This program is one of the first comprehensive Wellness & Fitness initiatives for Fire Departments across the nation. It is also one of the first organized joint initiatives undertaken in partnership between a local Fire Department and a major University. Once established, the IJ of A and the Fire Department plans to present this program at various national conferences in an effort to stimulate interest in other universities and Fire Departments.
