Re: Meeting of the Fayetteville City Council
At the City Council meeting of September 7, there will be a resolution presented
that will state the City's support for neighborhood schools. This resolution is the
result of citizens expressing their concerns over the relocation of Jefferson
Elementary School and the potential impact on South Fayetteville and the
families that reside there.
I would like to invite you to this meeting because of the school board's role in the
decision-making process for the planning, locating, and construction of schools in
the Fayetteville School Distnct and the need for good communication between
the Fayetteville School Board and the Fayetteville City Council. I hope this
dialogue will be beneficial for all concerned.

I very much. favor keeping our neighborhood schools.
I lived across the street from a neighborhood school
(Washington) and witnessed how valuable it was to the
neighboring community. Most of the kids could walk to
and from school. The neighborhood children could use
the playground and basketball court after school.
Adults also used the basketball court. The school was
generous and let the neighborhood association meet at
the school when the churches couldn't.
Why bus young children to a huge, anonymous school
which is many miles from their parents and home?
The "low socio-economic" argument is ridiculous.
The economic makeup of South Fayetteville is rapidly
changing because of the desirability of living near
downtown. Young professionals are moving into the
area and fixing up the homes. This area will offer a
delightful mix of people and their children will
contribute to the delightful mix of the school. I can
remember when the same things were said about the
residents that lived between West Lafayette and
Dickson. That area now is a wonderful area to live in
and the houses that are for sale are snatched up
immediately.

Dear Nancy:
Thank you for contacting me regarding the resolution that Alderman Marr is going to introduce concerning
neighborhood schools. I am most concerned about neighborhood schools and the welfare of children here in
Fayetteville, especially the SE area of our city. I think that our city government and school district has deprived our
friends in the SE area of Fayetteville of the quality life style that they deserve and have earned and I further feel that
closing down Jefferson School tears the heart and soul right out of their community. They not only have suffered
through the racial struggles that you and I have both witnessed while we have lived here, they have also had to live
with the comments from the financially blessed folks that prefer that their kids be in a better environment and playing
at the country club. It appears to me that the City of Fayetteville and the Fayetteville Public School District need to
slow down and forget about the TIF money for the damn hotel and see where it could be used for a truly deserving
area and that is SE Fayetteville where there should be a remodeled Jefferson School and a new school should be
constructed on the West side to accomodate the students that will be there in time when it is completed and will have
adequate spece for the future. I look forward to attending the 9/7/04 meeting

Nancy,
As we discussed this evening, and from the way I understand the issue, I am in support of neighborhood
schools, because I would like to see a sense of community and responsibility fostered even more than I
already see that it is in Fayetteville. I also think it is important for people of all ethnic and economic
backgrounds to meet in schools and communities. The important thing in a school, from my own
experience, is the children's well-being, feeling of security and connectedness, so that they can learn well.
