New, Supenntendent Fayetteville Public Schools Dr. Lisa Morstad, Chief Financial Officer Fayetteville Public Schools Re: Meeting of the Fayetteville City Council At the City Council meeting of September 7, there will be a resolution presented that will state the City's support for neighborhood schools. This resolution is the result of citizens expressing their concerns over the relocation of Jefferson Elementary School and the potential impact on South Fayetteville and the families that reside there. I would like to invite you to this meeting because of the school board's role in the decision-making process for the planning, locating, and construction of schools in the Fayetteville School Distnct and the need for good communication between the Fayetteville School Board and the Fayetteville City Council. I hope this dialogue will be beneficial for all concerned. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask. I lived across the street from a neighborhood school (Washington) and witnessed how valuable it was to the neighboring community. Most of the kids could walk to and from school. The neighborhood children could use the playground and basketball court after school. Adults also used the basketball court. The school was generous and let the neighborhood association meet at the school when the churches couldn't. Why bus young children to a huge, anonymous school which is many miles from their parents and home? The "low socio-economic" argument is ridiculous. The economic makeup of South Fayetteville is rapidly changing because of the desirability of living near downtown. Young professionals are moving into the area and fixing up the homes. This area will offer a delightful mix of people and their children will contribute to the delightful mix of the school. I can remember when the same things were said about the residents that lived between West Lafayette and Dickson. That area now is a wonderful area to live in and the houses that are for sale are snatched up immediately. ately.
