DEPARTMENTAL CORRESPONDENCE
TO: Hugh Earnest
FROM: Louise Schaper, Library Director
DATE February 5, 2003
SUBJECT City Council resolution to name the new Fayetteville Public Library
the Blair Library.
Background
The Fayetteville Public Library Foundation is conducting a capital campaign to
raise private funds to help build and equip the new library, as well as create an
endowment.
Current Status
Mr. James Blair announced a $3 million donation to the capital campaign on
February 28, 2002 in honor of his late wife, Diane Divers Blair, his grandmother,
Bessie Motley Blair, and his aunt, Dr. Mary Grace Blair. At this announcement,
Mr. Blair shared with the large crowd how he teamed the value of reading at the
lap of his grandmother and the worth of a library from trudging up the three flights
of stairs that it took to get to the public library when it was on the third floor of the
Fayetteville city hall.
Recommendation
On February 171 the Library Board of Trustees will be voting to name the building
the Blair Library. Because kick-off for the public phase of the capital campaign is
February 27, we ask that this be considered at the February 18 City Council
meeting.
If approved, the library facility would referred to as the:
Fayetteville Public Library
Blair Library
This will establish a nomenclature for naming any future branch libraries that the
City may have.
