RESOLUTION NO. 178-02
A RESOLUTION TO DESIGNATE 6114 STREET AS THE
HONORARY MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. BOULEVARD
WHEREAS, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was a visionary and courageous leader
who shined the light of brotherhood and freedom during the dark days of racial
segregation in America, and
WHEREAS, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. gave his life in the struggle for equality,
justice and freedom through non-violent inspirational leadership; and
WHEREAS, it is right and fitting that the City of Fayetteville, as home of the
first voluntarily integrated public school system in the South, honor and memorialize Dr.
King by designating a major thoroughfare as Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF
THE CITY OF FAYETTEVILLE, ARKANSAS•
Section 1. That the City Council of the City of Fayetteville, Arkansas hereby
designates 6th Street in Fayetteville, Arkansas, as the honorary "Martin Luther King Jr.
Boulevard" in honor of his contributions and to memorialize Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Section 2. That the City Council of the City of Fayetteville, Arkansas hereby
requests that the Arkansas Highway Department recognize this memorial designation
with appropriate signage on I-540 and the City shall erect appropriate large signs
identifying 6`h Street as also the honorary Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard.
PASSED and APPROVED this the 19th day of November, 2002.
