RE: Walker Park North Playground RFP Award
Background
In 1985, Community Development Block Grant (CBDG) funded several improvements to Walker
Park North, which included two playgrounds, pavilion, picnic tables, shelter picnic tables, and grills.
Due to deterioration of the 17 year old wood playgrounds and failure to meet playground safety
standards, it was determined that the playgrounds must be removed.
Current Status
The small playground by Walker Park North baseball field N8 which is located on the comer of
Block and 5th Street, has been purchased and is currently being installed. This playground serves
families utilizing the pavilion, soccer and baseball fields
The second playground will be located on Block Street in the northern section of Walker Park North
adjacent to the BMX Track, rectangle pavilion, and the future skate park A playground selection
committee was formed according to the Professional Selection Policy to select the playground.
Two contractors submitted an RFP for a playground design to cost $60,000. After presentations
from Kyle Recreation, Inc. and Arkoma playground representatives, Arkoma was selected based
upon the criteria of play value, durability, and aesthetics. Attached is a layout of the playground
which includes 4 slides, cool mister spray with shade, sand digger, 2 sand tables, 2 spider web
climbers, and a humpty climber. This playground meets all standards including ADA and
accessibility with poured in place rubber surfacing called Surface Amenca Sand will be installed
with a drainage system surrounding the structure within a concrete containment curb.
This playground will serve citizens utilizing the BMX track, future skate park, soccer fields, pavilion
and picnic areas, as well as neighborhood residences. The complete project will include two
phases. Phase II will be developed in 2003.
Recommendation
The Playground Selection Committee recommends for RFP #02-13 to be awarded to Arkoma
Playgrounds and Supply, LLC in the amount of $60,000. Please contact Connie Edmonton at
444-3471 or Yolanda Fields at 575-8290 for questions.
