RESOLUTION NO. 33 01
A RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF THE APRIL 28, 2001 FAYETTEVILLE CREEK
CLEANUP.
WHEREAS, a considerable amount of pollution has been documented along Scull Creek
and other creeks in Fayetteville, and
WHEREAS, the Fayetteville Urban Resources Stream Team has planned its Second
Annual Fayetteville Creek Clean Up on Scull Creek for Saturday, April 28, 2001, and
WHEREAS, several departments and societies within the University of Arkansas system,
the Arkansas Stream Team Program, Arkansas Game and Fish, Arkansas Environmental
Education Association, 4 County Solid Waste District, Washington County Cooperative
Extension Service, Arkansas State Sierra Club, Ozark Headwaters Group Siena Club,
and the Fayetteville Environmental Concerns Committee have each lent their support to
this creek cleanup effort, and
WHEREAS, the quality of water in Fayetteville's urban streams and creeks have a direct
impact on public health, recreation and property values, and
WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Fayetteville and many citizens of
Fayetteville would like to enc ourage the restoration of Fayetteville's natural waterways
and riparian zones,
WHEREAS, urban creeks can serve as living laboratories for hands-on environmental
education,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF FAYETTEVILLE, ARKANSAS:
Section 1. The City of Fayetteville hereby states its support of the Second Annual
Fayetteville Creek Clean Up and encourages all citizens to take part in this effort.
This support will include:
A. Providing solid waste roll -off dumpsters and other needed equipment within reason,
and

B. Staffing one or more informational booths in the Clean Up's Educational Resources
Area which feature the City of Fayetteville's efforts to encourage environmentally
responsible practices, and
C. Continued efforts to educate Fayetteville Citizens and to encourage multiple uses of
Fayetteville's urban streams, including
1) Installing signage at each creek crossing saying which creek flows there;
2) Initiating an Adopt -A -Creek program with city residents and/or groups;
3) Working with the University of Arkansas and FURST to produce a hydrology
map that would illustrate wetlands areas, creeks, multi -use trails and parks on
one side and environmental educational information on the back;
4) Establish multi -use trails along creeks and streams;
5) Installing trash cans and recycling bins along creek -side multi -use trails as the
trails are developed;
6) Initiating a public advertising campaign in the local media educating citizens
about City of Fayetteville environmental programs (recycling/parks/tree &
landscaping/trails/creeks, etc.)
7) Establish a citizen's hotline to report dumping, contamination and/or public
health related concerns, as they pertain to urban creek issues (as in sewage
overflows or hazardous waste spills).
