HomeMy WebLinkAbout28-98 RESOLUTIONRESOLUTION NO.2 8 - 9 8 A RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING MARCH 10, 1998 AS TIBETAN NATIONAL INDEPENDENCE DAY IN THE CITY OF FAYETTEVILLE. WHEREAS, on March 10, 1959 the army of the Peoples' Repubhc of China brutally attacked Tibetans demonstrating against the occupation of their country by China, and; WHEREAS, this attack on Tibet's capitol city resulted in the massacre of many Tibetans into exile, thus beginning a reign of terror over Tibet by the Peoples' Republic of China, which has been responsible for the murder of over a million Tibetans and for the destruction of six thousand monasteries, and; WHEREAS, the savage suppression of this historic demonstration of March 10, 1959 has come to be a symbol of Tibet's tenacious determination to regain her freedom and autonomy, and the Tibetan people therefore commemorate March 10 as Tibetan National Independence Day, and; WHEREAS, the City of Fayetteville is the home of J.W. Fulbright and the Fulbright Institute, and Fulbright scholar, Ngawang Choepel, is one of the many native Tibetans currently in prison, arrested by China while studying traditional dance and music in Tibet through the Fulbright grant program. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF FAYETTEVILLE, ARKANSAS - Section 1 That we, the City Council of Fayetteville do hereby affirm our strong belief in human nghts for all people by officially proclaiming March 10, 1998 as Tibetan National Independence Day herein the City of Fayetteville, Arkansas. By our expression of support for the Tibetan people, may all governments be encouraged to respect the civil and religious freedom of their citizens PASSED AND APPROVED this 3rd day of March , 1998.
