A RESOLUTION IN OPPOSITION TO ACT 707 OF 1997 AND
ITS UNDEMOCRATIC EFFECTS.
WHEREAS, the City of Fayetteville has reached a population greater than 50,000, as
determined by special federal census, and;
WHEREAS, Act 707 of 1997 of the state legislature provides for the extension of the term
"federal census", as referred to in A.C.A.§14-43-303, to include a special federal census, and;
WHEREAS, Act 707 of 1997 also provides for the extension of the terms of office of the
Mayor and City Clerk of any city facing this change in order to accommodate the election schedule
prescribed in A.C.A.§14-43-303, and;
WHEREAS, the electoral process is the basis of our Democracy, and thus should be fostered
and developed at every opportunity, and never circumvented, and;
WHEREAS, the public interest will be best served in such a time of change by providing
more elections, and not, as is suggested in Act 707, the skipping of an election for some municipal
offices
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL
OF FAYETTEVILLE, ARKANSAS:
Section 1. The Fayetteville City Council hereby goes down on record
Act 707 of 1997 and its undemocratic effects.
