In my judgment as Mayor of the City of Fayetteville, the
resolution is contrary to the public interest of the citizens of
Fayetteville because:
1. I consider it unnecessary as a correction of
our current personnel policies, which I am convinced
already allow employees and spokespersons for employees
to talk to me, their superiors, the City Council and
anyone else they wish.
2. I consider it the first step by the
Fayetteville Firefighters' Association toward seeking
union recognition in order to engage in collective
bargaining with the City.
3. I believe the resolution could be construed as
a recognition of the rights of certain special interest
groups among City employees. This is wrong. The goals
of special interest groups are not always consistent with
the general good. It has already led to

a certain amount of divisiveness in employee ranks and is
bound to lead to more.
Please cause this exercise of the veto power of the mayor to
be laid before the next regular meeting of the Fayetteville City
Council as required by law.
Sincerely,
Fred Hanna
Mayor
