HomeMy WebLinkAbout21-93 RESOLUTION• • RESOLUTION NO. 21-93 A RESOLUTION OF INTENT TO RE -SUBMIT TO THE VOTERS THE 1C SALES TAX AND TO CONSIDER ABOLISHING THE CITY'S 3.8 MILL PROPERTY TAX. WHEREAS, the Supreme Court of Arkansas, subject to the City's petition for re -hearing, has instructed the Chancellor to enjoin further collection of the City's 1C sales tax; and WHEREAS, if and when the current sales tax is enjoined, the citizens of Fayetteville will be without the finances needed for essential capital improvement projects and general operating expenses; and WHEREAS, the re -submission of the 1 C sales tax would allow the voters to re -approve the tax for such essential purposes, and WHEREAS, the abolishment of the City's current 3.8 mill property tax should be considered as a method of allowing the Fayetteville School District to seek additional funds without mcreasmg the taxes of Fayetteville citizens; and WHEREAS, a resolution of intent is beneficial in order to stimulate citizen discussion of these issues which are vital to the future of Fayetteville. BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF FAYETTEVILLE, ARKANSAS: Section 1. That the Mayor and City Council hereby state their intent to re -submit to the voters the City's le sales tax as soon as feasible after any final Supreme Court ruling abolishing such tax. Section 2. That the Mayor and City Council hereby further state their intent to consider abohshing the City's 3.8 mill property tax in an effort to assist the Fayetteville School District without increasing taxes.
