HomeMy WebLinkAbout101-90 RESOLUTIONRESOLUTION NO. 101-90 A RESOLUTION SUPPORTING THE REDUCTION OF THE SPEED LIMIT AND OTHER SAFETY MEASURES ON WEDINGTON ROAD BETWEEN HIGHWAY 71 BYPASS AND THE WEST CITY LIMITS. WHEREAS, recent fatal accidents on Wedington Road between the Highway 71 Bypass and the west city limits of Fayetteville have emphasized the dangerous and hazardous nature of that roadway; WHEREAS, over 90 accidents have occurred on that roadway from January 1988 to June 18, 1990; and WHEREAS, the tragic loss of life and injury to persons and property on this roadway has caused serious detriment and grief to the citizens of the City of Fayetteville; WREREAS,'the likelihood of future accidents on this roadway appears certain Unless additional safety measures are taken" BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD. OF DIRECTORS OF THE CITY OF FAYETTEVILLE, ARKANSAS: , f . 1 ! Section 1. That the Board of Directors of the City of Fayetteville hereby directs the. City 'Manage= .to take all steps necessary to advocate 'to the Arkansas'State Highway Commission that the speed limits on Wedington Road between the Highway 71 Bypass and the west city limits be reduced and that other safety measures be explored to reduce accidents on that roadway. Section 2. That the Board of Directors hereby commends and supports the recommendations and efforts of the Arkansas State Highway Commissioner Bobby Hopper in reducing the accidents on this roadway. Section 3. That the Board of Directors hereby directs the City Manager to forward a copy of this resolution and the report of Chief of Police Richard L. Watson regarding the accidents on this roadway to the Arkansas State Highway Department. Watson, Chief of Police DATE: June 19, 1990 SUBJECT: Accidents Occurring on Wedington Road In light of recent questions about the number of accidents occurring on Wedington road, we have done an analysis of our computer records and compiled some statistics. We were not automated prior to January of 1988, so the below information covers from January 1988 to June 18, 1990. Also attached are two charts showing causative factors of accidents and a breakdown showing how many were fatality, injury, or property damage only. ACCIDENTS ON WEDINGTON ROAD Fatality Accidents: 4 Caused by: 1. Failure To Yield 2. Wrong side of road 3. Failure to maintain control 4. Unavoidable (pedestrian in road) Personal Injury Accidents Property Damage Accidents Total number of accidents: 32 54 90 The attached bar chart gives a breakdown of causative factors for the 90 accidents.
