WHEREAS, U.S. Highway 71 between Alma and Fayetteville is extremely hazardous; and WHEREAS, several traffic accident fatalities have occurred on said portion of U.S. Highway 71; and WHEREAS, construction to interstate standards of a highway having a minimum of four lanes from Fayetteville to the Alma/Van Buren area would greatly improve traffic safety for residents of Fayetteville and students at the University of Arkansas and would result in fuel cost savings for motorists. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF THE CITY OF FAYFTlEVILLE, ARKANSAS: That the Board of Directors hereby strongly supports construction to interstate standards of a highway having a minimum of four lanes from Fayetteville to Interstate I-40 near Alma/Van Buren. DRAWER F MEMORANDUM TO: Arkansas State Highway and Transport FROM: Paul Noland, Mayor of Fayetteville DATE: October 3, 1984 72702 (501) 521-7700 ton Dept. f 4,46 Enclosed is a copy of a resolution passed by the Fayetteville City Board of Directors on October 2 concerning a proposed 4 -lane, controlled access highway between Fayetteville and 1-40. Let me reaffirm my support for this project. I drive this route frequently and am ever conscious of the many hazards to safe driving which exist on Highway 71. Each week -end, large numbers of University students and other Fayetteville citizens drive this road. In addition, there are large numbers of trucks constantly moving on this major highway. In the interests of safety as well as fuel economy, ease of driving and the fact that this road will bring Northern Arkansas closer to Ft. Smith and Little Rock, 1 would urge that this 4 -lane highway be constructed as soon as funds can be obtained for the project. PN:jlc
