A RESOLUTION ENDORSING AND SUPPORTING THE CITY
OF SPRINGDALE, ARKANSAS, APPLICATION FOR A RUN-
WAY EXTENSION AND AN INSTRUMENT LANDING SYSTEM.
WHEREAS, the City of Fayetteville desires to upgrade air service in Northwest
Arkansas and, in particular, aviation services located at Drake Field, Fayetteville,
Arkansas; and
WHEREAS, a need exists for the development of an alternate/reliever airport
capability; and
WHEREAS, the present alternate/reliever facilities are located at Fort Smith,
Tulsa and other remote locations which are not suitable due to the distance,
topography and economic considerations involved; and
WHEREAS, the City of Fayetteville desires to coordinate with and assist the
City of Springdale in its effort to upgrade the Springdale Municipal Airport by
extending the runway and installing a precision or instrument landing system
approach; and
WHEREAS, completion of said improvement will greatly reduce the number of
overflights in the Northwest Arkansas area thereby enhancing passenger safety
and reducing aircraft maintenance and fuel consumption as well as improving
air service for the citizens of Northwest Arkansas; and
WHEREAS, the development and improvement of alternate/reliever airport
capabilities is a high priority for general aviation improvements to Drake Field
and Northwest Arkansas.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT HEREBY RESOLVED that the City of Fayetteville, acting
by and through its duly constituted Board of Directors, urges that the Federal
Aviation Administration give full support and assistance to the proposed air-
port extension and future precision approach capabilities for the Springdale
Municipal Airport and that immediate and thorough consideration be given to the
reclassification of the Springdale Municipal Airport as a reliever airport in order
to secure for the citizens of Northwest Arkansas greatly needed improvements in
safety and citizen access to energy conscious and efficient aviation services.
