FAYETTEVILLE CENTER SQUARE
NWArkansas Architects' Council Proposal
This proposal indicates:
A CENTER MALL
* A continuous north -south mall established by planting a row of trees
on either side of the Old Post Office Building, 4
* A "quiet" court on the north between the banks and the Old Post Office,
usable for a variety of civic and cultural events, and
* An "active" or sales promotion court between the Old Post Office and
the stores on the south (Penney's, Davidson's, etc.) with vehicular
access for auto and boat shows, farmer's market, etc.
ACCESS and TRAFFIC
* Block and East remaining one-way as existing,
Mountain
the lost
and Center returning to two-way traffic to restore much of
access to the Square,
4$ Establishing pedestrian right-of-way, and
* With right turns only on and off the Square thus developed, ELIMINATING
ALL TRAFFIC LIGHTS
PARKING
* A loss of some 32 parking spaces on the Square proper: existing spaces 106
spaces shown 74
spaces lost 32
(Note: The proposal to close only Center Street to traffic appears to
lose some 30 parking spaces.)
* Recovering this deficit by changing Block and East from parallel to 450
parking within one block of the Square
