That the City Council of the City of Fayetteville, Arkansas hereby amends §33.240: Purposes and Duties of Article XI: Environmental Action Committee of Chapter 33: Departments, Boards, Commissions, and Authorities of the Code of Fayetteville,to add a new subsection(C)to the section which shall read as follows: "(C) The Environmental Action Committee may coordinate all City efforts to obtain and maintain an annual community wildlife habitat designation through the National Wildlife Federation subject to City Council approval." Points Activity RequiredSubmit this yearly post-certification update form Secure a feature article in the local media about 10 your project Maintain information kiosk, library or website 10 established during certification stage Create a website for your project, if your 10 community does not yet have one Continued hosting of annual event started during 10 certification stage Participate (through a booth) in at least one 5 community event (up to 4) Host or organize a Habitat Stewards or 10 conservation advocacy training Participate in a quarterly Community Wildlife 5 Habitat conference call (up to 4) Host a garden tour that features Certified Wildlife 10 Habitat sites Create a new demonstration garden, with 10 educational signage Continue regular column in your community paper/newsletter to educate community members 10 about your project and how to take action Deliver an oral presentation at a community group not yet associated with your project (up to 5 6) Give a presentation on Community Wildlife 10 Habitats to a neighboring community Mentor a neighboring community through the 10 certification process C Have member of habitat team serve on a community committee or board that addresses 5 community environmental issues Examine your community's weed ordinances, and other public policies, and work to make them 10 more native plant and habitat friendly Work with local park agencies to convert parkland 10 to wildlife friendly landscapes. Organize a community meeting with your congressional or legislative member about a 10 current issue affecting wildlife Educate your community about their carbon or water footprint and provide actions they can take 10 to reduce it Each additional home, townhome or apartment 1 certified with NWF Each additional common area (workplace, park, community garden, place of worship, farm) 3 certified with NWF 5 Each additional school certified with NWF TBD Additional project approved by NWF 1 Earning Points Toward Certification Once your Community Wildlife Habitat project is registered, you can start earning the points you'll need to become officially certified. Your team can do this by getting out into your community, educating your neighbors, certifying habitats and organizing community projects. Some projects or habitat certification points earned before registration may also be counted. Please check with your NWF contact. How many points do you need to certify? The number of points you'll need depends on how big your community is. Community's Total Points Needed Population to Certify 50,000- 100,000 500 How do you earn points? When you submitted the registration form, you earned at least 40 points for your community. The remainder of the points must be earned in the following four areas: I. Habitat Certification Goals There is a sliding scale for habitat certification points, based on population size. ✓ One point for each home, townhome, or apartment. ✓ Three points for every public site, workplace, park, community garden, farm, place of worship, or other common area. ✓ Five points for every Schoolyard Habitats site certified. ✓ Three,five or ten bonus points if each member of the Habitat Team certifies their yard as a Certified Wildlife Habitat site, depending on the population of the community.
