HomeMy WebLinkAbout2000-12-11 - Minutes• GROUP: ADVERTISING & PROMOTION COMMISSION DATE December 11, 2000 PRESENT: Joe Fennel, Fred Hanna, Alex Jerde, Ching Mong, Curtis Shipley, John Maguire, Lisa Lee and Marilyn Johnson ABSENT: Heather Daniel and John Gilliam John Green, artist from Blackwood Martin/CJRW presented a new logo design for the Town Center. He explained the concept and showed examples of how the design could be used. Moved by Shipley, second by Jerde to accept the design. Motion carried. The regular meeting of the Advertising and Promotion Commission was called to order at the Chamber of Commerce conference room at 2:00 p.m. by Chairman Joe Fennel. MINUTES Moved by Shipley, second by Jerde to approve the minutes of the November 13 meeting. Motion carried. FINANCIAL REPORT • John Maguire presented the financial reports for November. Collections were $117,108, a 6.89% increase (this is the largest amount collected in a single month). Year to date collections are $1,156,539, a 7.73% increase over last year's collections year to date. Expenses for the month of November were $17,249. Delinquent taxes were noted. Fennel asked Marilyn to make sure city sends a letters at two month intervals. Trolley report was also discussed. Moved to approve by Shipley, second by Mong. Motion carried. • CONVENTION AND VISITOR DEVELOPMENT REPORT Marilyn Johnson reviewed activity of her office. Inquiries year-to-date are up approximately 2,300 over last year. Bus tour business has increased over last year. Arkansas Parks and Tourist brought a coach of group tour leaders in last week to experience the Lights of the Ozarks. Because of the increase in motor coach activity, Marilyn will solicit and train volunteers as step -on guides during next year. The NWA Charity Horse Show will move from Bentonville to Fayetteville in 2001. Activities for November included beginning of the Lights of the Ozarks festival, Veteran's Day parade, and an evaluation meeting for Bikes, Blues, and BBQ. The airport information booth is ready and waiting on payment from A & P Commissions involved. We lost a bid for the Arkansas Municipal League to Ft. Smith. Got the All Start Festival and Coaches Clinic in 2002. That involved 1700 coaches and 235 athletes. • • • ADVERTISING AGENCY REPORT Susan Wallace reported that the agency had worked on media recommendations for 2001. Trails are being marked to the running/walking trails brochure. She thanked the Commission for approving the Town Center logo. OLD BUSINESS Town Center Progress on Project Marilyn Johnson reported that considerable progress was being made on the steel supports. Weather had been generous to contractor until today. Mason was beginning bricking of the structure. Topping Out Ceremony Topping Out Ceremony is scheduled for Thursday, December 21 at 12 noon. Draft Ordinance revising HMR collections Marilyn presented results of survey of A & P Commissions in the state. Reviewing the state law, she noted that it is clearly the intent of the state law to collect HMR tax from food prepared for on -premise and off -premise consumption. Rolf Wilkin of Eureka Pizza spoke to the Commission. Moved by Jerde, second by Shipley to recommend draft ordinance to City Council. Motion carried. NEW BUSINESS Media recommendations for 2001 Susan introduced Brad Ruth and Lisa Murphy who presented recommendations by Blackwood Martin/CJRW for 2001. Moved by Shipley, second by Jerde to approve recommendations of the agency. Motion carried. Fennel asked that we check into a salsa festival for 2001 for late summer. Approval of budget for 2001 Moved by Shipley, second by Jerde to approve the 2001 operating budget and A & P Fund budget. Motion carried. Authorization for Chairman to execute contract with Chamber of Commerce Fennel led discussion on forming a CVB, which would eliminate the Chamber of Commerce contract in 2002. All personnel would be into the Town Center. He stressed that he had met with Steve Ward and that both had agreed that it would be a good business decision for the Commission. The Chamber relationship with the A & P Commission has been a good one over the years. The Chamber has done a good job overseeing the A & P Commission business. Moved by Jerde, second by Mong to authorize the Chairman to execute the contract with the Chamber for 2001. Motion carried. • • • Authorization to open a checking account for the Town Center Moved by Shipley, second by Jerde to authorize opening a checking account for the Town Center. Marilyn will bring specifics to the next A & P Commission meeting. OTHER BUSINESS Joe Fennel recognized Mayor Fred Hanna and Heather Daniel for their service on the A & P Commission. Shipley said there wouldn't be a Town Center if it weren't for Fred Hanna and the amount of sweat equity, which went into this project. There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned.
