PRESENT: Heather Daniel, Joe Fennel, Fred Hanna, Alex Jerde, Curtis Shipley, Jim
Waselues, and Marilyn Johnson
ABSENT: Carl Maguire
The regular meeting of the Advertising and Promotion Commission was called to order at
the Chamber of Commerce conference room at 2:00 p.m. by Commissioner Joe Fennel.
ELECTION OF CHAIRMAN FOR 2000
Moved by Shipley, second by Hanna to elect Joe Fennel Chairman for 2000. Motion
carried.
MINUTES
Minutes were corrected as follows:
MINUTES: Waselues to approve minutes.
Funding requests for 2000 — Moved by Daniel, second by Shipley to approve the
recommendations of the committee.
Moved by Shipley, second by Daniel to approve the minutes of the December 10 meeting
as corrected. Motion carried.
FINANCIAL REPORT
John Maguire presented the financial report. Collections for December were $96,583, up
6.42% over last December. Year to date collections are $1,170,114, up 6.91%.
Expenses for the month were $1,700. Moved by Shipley, second by Waselues to approve
the financial report. Motion carried.
CONVENTION AND VISITOR DEVELOPMENT REPORT
Marilyn Johnson reviewed activity report in agenda packet. Inquiries were up 15% for
the year. Relocation guide has been updated and reprinted. Lights of the Ozarks events
including Holiday Hoops, and First Night events were most successful. Joe Fennel
announced Police Bike National Championships to be held in Fayetteville on June 9-11.
Organizers are looking to expand festival to corporate event in the future.
ADVERTISING AGENCY REPORT
Susan Wallace reported on inquiry increase. Agency is working on ad placement and
production of ads. Dining and lodging brochure is being updated.
• OLD BUSINESS
Town Center
Richard Alderman gave the Commissioners a construction update. The structural slab for
plaza has been poured and construction activity has turned to the southern portion. Cuts
have been made, columns poured, and tower crane base set. Rain has muddied up the site
but Nabholtz foresees no problem in meeting construction schedule. They appear to be
slightly ahead of schedule.
Alderman requested that the Commission set policy on change orders. Shipley moved,
Jerde second that Richard Alderman work with city staff for solutions, review with
Marilyn, update Commission monthly. If Marilyn feels A & P Commission needs to be
consulted regarding changes, then she can set a meeting. Motion carred.
Marilyn updated the Commission on the status of Town Center lawsuits.
NEW BUSINESS
Contract with Chamber of Commerce
Moved by Shipley, second by Jerde to approve the contract with the Chamber of
Commerce for 2000. Motion carried.
Shipley asked that rate structure for Town Center be initiated. Job descriptions for Town
Center sales manager will be through Chambers of Commerce, hotels, local papers, and
the intemet. A & P asked that they be allowed to sit in on interviews with the top 2- 3
candidates.
Budget Rollforwards
Hanna moved, second by Shipley to approve budget rollforwards Motion carried
NCAA/SEC Indoor Track Championships
These events are scheduled for February 25-26 and March 10-11. Moved by Shipley,
second by Hanna that the A & P participate through a $5,000 premium package. Motion
carried.
The U of A will also host International meet on February 11-12. Tickets are $10 per
adult, $5 for students, and children accompanied by parent are free.
Maguire Resignation
Carl Maguire resigned from the Commission. He is now the general manager at the
Hilton Gardens in Bentonville. Fennel expressed appreciation for his input on the Town
Center and said the Hilton Gardens is a great opportunity for Carl.
Other items
John Maguire volunteered Steve Davis to help Richard Alderman and Marilyn Johnson
with the rate structure for the Town Center.
