HomeMy WebLinkAbout1990-12-03 - MinutesGROUP: ADVERTISING AND PROMOTION COMMISSION DATE: DECEMBER 3, 1990 PRESIDING: MICHAEL GREEN, CHAIRMAN PRESENT: Coy Kaylor, Pat Henry, Fred Vorsanger, and Michael Green. OTHERS PRESENT: Steven Ward, Richard Shewmaker, Alett Little, Michelle Galloway, Mark Blackwood, Susan Stirewalt, Majorie Harcrow and Rusty Meyer. ABSENT: Bill Martin, Nathan Combs and Jim Waseleus 1. The meeting was called to order by Michael Green, Chairman. 2. A motion was made by Coy Kaylor and seconded by Fred Vorsanger to approve the minutes as read. Carried. 3. Ad Agency Selection - Michael Green reported that due to the process it was not possible to have an agency in place by January 1, 1991, and recommended that the Commission extend the existing contract with Blackwood/Martin for six months. The Commission reviewed the interview process and the op- tions in length of time to extend the existing contract. Motion by Coy Kaylor and seconded by Pat Henry to extend the contract with Blackwood/Martin for six months. Motion by Fred Vorsanger and seconded by Michael Green to amend the moti9on to a three month extensioin. Amendment carried. Amended motion - carried. 4. Economic Development Update - The City Economic Development staff was introduced and a update given on the departments activities including: Round Table of A&P Commissions from around the state was attended by Michelle Galloway which included Community Festival Coordination, Group Tours and Tour Travel Shows. Michelle felt many contacts had been made and good ideas brought back from the conference. Industrial Development - The major focus for advertising is 'through major development magazines on a national basis with a major focus of the staff to develop a better community packet for industrial prospects. 6 Convention Development - Promotionofthe CCE through advertising in Successful Meetings is the major focus. 7 Marketing Plan - Richard Shewmaker presented a concept of a Advisory Committee to recommend promotional activities for Fayetteville and listed possible names. Fred Vorsanger and Coy Kaylor agreed that existing activities need more commmunity support and that this concept could be a means of gaining community input and cooperation. 8. Guest Speaker - Richard Shewmaker introduced Rusty Meyer from the Van Buren A & P Commission. Mr. Meyer noted a enthusiasm to work together to promote the area, and offered their support. 9. Marjorie Harcrow from the Van Buren Chamber noted their advertising in the University's Alumni Association Magazine and their effort to work with the Northwest Arkansas area. 10. Motion by Fred Vorsanger and seconded by Coy Kaylor to move ahead with an Advisory Committee to develop a marketing plan. Carried. 11. 800 Number Update - Steve Ward gave the Commission a review of the 800 number activity noting that the low number of callsreflects thelack of advertising the number in September and October. Advertising of the number started in November and that should give a better reflection of its worth. 12. Adjourned. r.
