ACTION: 1. The matter of advertising at the airport
by the Bentonville Inn was referred to the Commission for dis-
cussion by the City Board. Ron Bumpass explained his concern
that the Commission was not responding to the airport survey
and promoting what Fayetteville has to offer airline customers.
It was noted that the airport is a regional facility and we
• need to regional in our approach to its promotion. It was a-
greed that the advertising should be available to interested
businesses and that we need to develop a better way of market-
.. ing the space available. This present contract will go back to
the City Board for action. The airport staff is to get a copy
of the airport study to Blackwood & Martin for futher study as
we approach future advertising needs.
2. Jay Lewis was present to ask for support of
the Commission in advertising the Razorback Run in Tulsa and
Little Rock papers this weekend. He specifically requested
$700 for these ads. On a motion by Garland Melton, second by
Bumpass, it was agreed to allocate this money from previously
budgeted newspaper advertising not yet spent.
3. Blackwood & Martin discussed the co-op idea
being advanced by the State Parks & Tourism Department to tar-
get an 8 month direct mail campaign to group tour planners
during 1988. A four-page newsletter is being developed, with
the Tourism Department to utilize the first and last issues
and the remaining six to be allocated to interested cities to
tell their stories. Our estimated cost would be $1,265 and it
could be worked out of next year's budget. The Commission
voted to approve Fayetteville's participation.
4. The Agency also noted Ron Bumpass letter
concerning the Rand -McNally and Money magazine studies showing
Fayetteville's ranking for retirement and a place to live. It
• is their intent to use this material as we develop the quality
of life brochure intended for next year to supplement the two
brochures currently being used.
••
5. Scott Linebaugh asked the Commission to name
someone to work with him on next year's budget needs. On a
motion by Bumpass, second by Hess, Dale Christy was named to do
this in consultation with Blackwood & Martin.
6. Jim Pennington brought up the need for a
new City image package to improve the marketing of the City to
the public. He commended the brochures and advertising being
done by the Commission and expressed a desire to pattern other
City printed materials to become part of a comprehensive City
image package. On a motion by Melton, second by Bumpass, $2100
was allocated from the Special Project budget to begin this
work with the understanding that an expected additional $650
could come from next year's budget or other unused allocations
that may be available at the end of this budget year.
7. Scott Linebaugh reported that a work draft
of a proposed Economic -Development Department was nearing `study
completion and will be reviewed by the City Manager before com-
ing to the Commission for study.
8. Ron Bumpass called attention to the Commis-
sion of the problems being created with the economy from chang-
ing the time of football games to noon kickoff.. He suggested
that someone should call this to the attention of Frank Broyles
for future consideration. It was agreed that we should monitor
the other games this year and then consider meeting with the
University to discuss the matter.
