Dale Christy, Joe Martin, Mark Blackwood ABSENT: Don Clark ACTION: 1. The meeting was called to order by Marilyn Johnson. 2. Dale Christy presented a request from the Meteoritical Society for sponsorship of one of the social events planned for their internat- ional conference to be held in Fayetteville in July, 1988. On a motion by Melton, second by Hess, the Commission approved an allocation from the 1988 budget for $2,000 to sponsor the Welcome Reception for this group. 3. Dale Christy presented a request from the University of Arkansas Press for assistance with a social event for the Southern University P resses' Regional Conference to be held in September, 1987. On a motion by Melton, second by Sanders, .$150 was allocated from the 1987 budget for this event. 4. Chairman Johnson asked that Nancy Bittle be invited to the next meeting to explain her tour service available to visiting groups. 5. Hess made a motion, seconded by Bumpass, that the Com- mission ask the City Staff to investigate the creation of an Economic Develop- ment Department to staff the City's involvement in Tourism, Public Relations, Commercial and Industrial Development. This study should investigate the costs of such a department and the expected return to the City. The motion was approved. 6. Mark Blackwood and Joe Martin presented the Addy Awards earned by their agency on City projects implemented during the last year. 7. Martin presented the creative for the fourth ad in the cur- rent ad series being used for City placement in 1987-88. 8. Blackwood discussed specialty items that might be used for the planned promotion to travel agencies. Items considered: Desk Pen (4.84), Apothacary Jar with candy (4.50), Pen/Pencil Caddy with candy (4.95), Paper Cube (4.18), Leather paper weight (3.70), Leather Coasters (2.50). The Com- mission asked them to pursue a design for the Paper Cube idea and submit with a budget for implementation. 9. Next meeting: Tuesday, May 26, 1:30 p.m. MEETING ADJOURNED 10. The commission again considered the request by the City Airport committee at. the last meeting for the funding of an airport needs study. It was the general consensus of the commission that this was not a matter for A & P funding. 11. Mayor Noland expressed his appreciation to the commission members and his pleasure of having served on this commission while being Mayor of Fayetteville. He indicated that a new Mayor would be selected be- fore our January meeting and he inturn would have the right to appoint the other two City Board members to serve on the commission. These people should all be indentified in time for the January 27 meeting. MEETING ADJOURNED
