ACTION: 1. The meeting was called to order by Ron Bumpass.
2. By concensus it was agreed that the February 24 and
March 24 meetings previously scheduled would begin at 2:00 p.m. instead
of 3:00 p.m.
3. The Chairman asked Blackwood and Martin to proceed and
discuss the details of the Economic Development advertising package for 1987
as a follow-up to the previously adopted tentative budget. Susan Stirewalt
explained the media plan as per the documentation attached to and made a part
of this report.
On a motion by Melton and second by Dyer, the Commission
unanimously approved the Economic Development conceptual plans as presented.
4. The Chairman brought up an idea of considering what the
Commission might do to promote a Spring event. He reported that he had met
with .University officials about promoting. Razorback baseball as a Spring attract-
ion. He then asked Joe Martin to elaborate on a visit with John Nauman and
Coach Debriyn.
Apparently there is some interest in developing a promotional
co-op package for two or three game weekends in late Spring centering on the
Tulsa, Joplin and/or Springfield areas. The Commission asked Martin to put
together a potential program to consider either using general media allocations
or possibly considering this for a special project funding request, and/or a
combination of the two. This will be considered further at the next meeting.
5. The Chairman discussed the possibility of interest on the
part of Arkansas -Missouri Railroad on providing passenger service between
Fayetteville and Fort Smith. He distributed a letter he is writing Mr. Hannold
today suggesting conversation on this matter and encouraged other members of
the Commission to write similar letters if they see fit.
On a motion by Melton, second by Clodfelter, the Commission
voted to ask Mayor Johnson to write a letter to Mr. Hannold expressing the
interest of the Commission in this idea as an area promotional possibility.
6. Joe Martin reported that the agency has met with airline
representatives about the idea of a newsletter to travel agencies about flight
schedules from Fayetteville. The airline people indicated that they did not
need this help, but they would like us to continue media placement to help
counter the Tulsa origination problem.
