The meeting was called to order by Susan Norton in room 326 of City Hall. Notes from
the September meeting were approved. Norton called for action group reports.
Peg Hart reported for the Technology Park and distributed their most recent newsletter.
Highlights included the Pilot Tear Collection for breast cancer detection, the Arkansas
Power Electronics International (APEI) grant for hybrid vehicle research, and the
"Socktober" annual fall collection of socks to be donated to the 7hills Homeless Center.
Chung Tan reported for the Chamber that the Hispanic Hispanic Heritage Festival was a
great success, including hosting the President of Panama as a special guest. We will
highlight a different country each year in the years to come; next up will be Mexico,
Colombia, and Brazil. The U of A International Admissions program has 40 internships
coming this year through the Brazilian STEM program (funded by Brazil with over
100,000 participants worldwide). FFEAC members were encouraged to consider
internship opportunities. The Construction and Developer's Banquet will be held to
highlight projects being done in the region and those who are managing them. Over 320
people are expected to attend. November 18-22 is the second year for Manufacturer's
Appreciation Week.
Jamie Renae reported for the Inclusion group about Compassionate Fayetteville
Compassionate Games Results. Fayetteville won first place in the national competition!
Jamie shared statistics: 5, 245 people were served and there were $2300 in donations.
November 23 from 10 — Noon will be Compassion Caf6 Day at St. Paul's. Jamie asked
for ideas about how to get more participants in the group; recruitment is challenging.
Steve Smith reported for the Historic and Heritage Resources Action Group from their
October meeting. The group participated in a tour of historic 1886 Peter Smyth House,
National Register property, by Carolyn Madison. Fayetteville GIS Maps of Historic
Markers and National Register Properties now online. Smith acknowledged and thanked
the Mayor for his staff efforts:http://gis2.accessfayetteville.org/Historic/NationalRegister/
The Historic Structure Report underway on antebellum Woolsey Homestead and
Cemetery Restoration of Historic Bridges on Maple and Lafayette in second phase, 2014
completion. Discussed the Arkansas Downtown Network and passed resolution to
proceed with application. Endorsed Proposed Ordinance: Amend § 164.11 Height and
Setback Regulations; Exceptions: An ordinance to Amend § 164.11 Height and Setback
Regulations; Exceptions to enhance livability through appropriate transitions in building
scale and to protect access to air and sunlight and to enact an emergency clause. Next
meeting will be November 7, 5:30 p.m.
Angela Wisely reported for the Green Economy Group on the status of the Greening of
the MLS project highlighting the green and sustainable aspects of homes on the market in
the region. The City Council is forming the first PACE District in the state. The group
will be moving regular meeting times to the 2nd Friday of the month beginning in
January, 8-10 a.m. at the Chamber.
Katherine Barnhart reported from the Creative Economy group. Christopher Spencer has
asked to step down as President of CEAG, Inc. and they will be transitioning to new
leadership. Sonya has submitted an A&P grant for the Creative Directory App ($9, 625
requested). CEAG, Inc. will take financial responsibility for their web domain.
Katherine attended a KIVA Zip for Social Responsibility workshop in Little Rock.
CEAG endorses Main St. Arkansas and the PACE ordinance. The parade for "Lights of
the Ozarks" is not to be Last Night as previously thought but all are welcome to attend to
participate and "harness their superpower to move Fayetteville Forward!" Katherine
presented on behalf of Colleen Pancake a birthday present of a strand of Christmas lights
to Mayor Jordan.
Sarah Marsh visited with Lori Boatright at the Farmer's Market and they are looking for location
for Winter Gardens. She wondered if the John Porter Produce Building next to Grubs may be a
viable location. Sarah is still in discussion on the compatibility ordinance and mobile vending
ordinance that are coming through the Planning Commission. Urban Ag proposal is moving
forward and is in public comment phase. There will be a Ward 2 meeting at Tricycle Farms
coming up.
Mayor Lioneld Jordan reported on Bikes, Blues and BBQ that we had over 250,000 folks in
attendance. He met with the President of Panama at the Hispanic Heritage Festival. The Town
Hall Meeting was well attended and he participated in the Yvonne Richardson Center Banquet.
He mete with legislators in DC discussing concerns regarding airport funding and the
Community Block Development Grant Funding. Food Security Awareness Day is coming up.
Other events will be the Chili Pepper Run, the Washington County Historical Society annual
meeting, Crosswalk Safety Day, the UA Homecoming Parade. The FHS Homecoming Parade
was well attended as always. Jordan attended the Applied Sustainability Summit in Little Rock
as a panelist discussing streamside protection, among other things. He reported on the Flyover,
Crossover Road, and Historic Bridges projects. The city's activities on sustainability are
continuing to be cutting edge with the PACE historic legislation and our award as Top Recyling
City in Arkansas and our 5 bloom award from America in Bloom. The Marion Orton Recycling
Center opened. City Hall is installing energy saving water aerators and vending misers.
Fayetteville is one of the top 100 college towns and the only city in Arkansas to be in top tier in
livability.com. 50 new bike racks have been installed around the city and new car battery
recharging stations as well.
Dede Peters is updating the web site for Fayetteville Forward and asks for all group documents
so she can upload. She reviewed the Fayetteville Forward Charter and its focus as a Citizen
Action Group.
Susan Norton gave an overview of the Fayetteville Public Education Foundation Hall of Honor
event honoring Rudy Moore, Hugh Kincaid, and Hershey and Denise Garner as outstanding
contributors to our city's public school educational environment.
Sarah Marsh reminded everyone that an expanded Farmer's Market allows for opportunities for
free space for Fayetteville Forward groups to use as recruitment stations. Also, KUAF and the
Convention Visitor's Center has even web sites groups can post their meetings to, as well as the
Chamber of Commerce.
Steve Smith moved to adjourn at 10 a.m. Next month's meeting will be November 15 at City
Hall.
